Honourable Sir, I humbly beg leave to state that in the year 1835 I settled as Squatter on the Calumet Island, on a lot of land which I considered would contain about 200 acres, considering that, as I had a large family, no less than about 200 acres would be of any Service to me. I got lines ran which afterwards chanced to correspond exactly with the lines ran by the Government Surveyor — But at the time that I Squatted thereon I expected that when the lots would be surveyed they would each contain 200 acres as was customary. However, when the district was surveyed, it was in lots of but 100 acres each; consequently the tract of land I occupied became two lots as it contained 200 acres, which lots are Nos. 13 and 14. on the 6th Range — And compliance with the rules of Lord Durham’s proclamation, I got my name inserted as Squatter in his registry for said 200 acres - — Widow Anne Cahill to the Crown Lands Department, 13 Sept 1848 Anne Cahill petition, 1848, Upper Canada Land Petitions, RG 1, L 3, vol. 137, C Bundle 5, petition 28: microfilm C-1736, Library and Archives Canada

1(v). William Shirley, yeoman of Nepean, Carlton Co born about 1794 at Mothel, Castlecomer, Kilkenny Ireland; He migrated to Canada from Ireland about 1815, when in that same year his son Paul Shirley was christened at St Phillips Catholic Church at Richmond Township, Carlton County Ontario Canada (parents identified); In 1828, William Shirley was listed as a resident of the "Rideau Canal" who desired a land grant; In that record, William's family was stated to include 6 male children and 4 female children for a total of 10 kids in the family; He was granted 100 acres of land at Huntley, Carlton County Ontario in 1828; In 1829, William was identified in a document created for the purpose of recruiting new migrants to Canada from Ireland. The document stated that William was born at Mohill, Castlecomer Kilkenny and that he had a brother Paul Shirley who still resided there at the time. William was identified as being age 33 in the 1829 militia list for Huntley Carlton County. At the time, he was occupying the same lot of land as his brother in law Michael Cahill. William sold his 100 acres in Huntley Township in 1829 and purchased 200 acres in nearby Nepean Township, Carlton County; He was enumerated in the 1842 census for Nepean with 4 Irish natives and 4 Canadian natives in his household. 1 person was a member of the Church of England (William) and the other 7 were identified as Catholics. He still owned 200 acres of land, 50 of which was planted in wheat; Willlam Shirley died 1846 by drowning in the Ottawa River at Nepean, Carlton County, Ontario.

1829 Huntley township, Carleton Co., Ontario - Mich'l Cahill 1st, age 36; Mich'l Cahill 2d, age 22; and William Shirley, age 33, all on Lot 24 Con 6 - 1829 Huntley Militia List, Transcribed by Bruce S. Elliott, (Ottawa Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society).

"William Shirley (Paul's brother) came from Mothill parish, County Kilkenny. He was Anglican but his first wife was Catholic. William Shirley was one of the first Kilkenny Ireland families to emigrate to Canada about 1817; not because of the potato famine, which occurred much later, but because of the poor economic conditions in England and Ireland following the Napoleonic Wars with France. Initially William and his brother in law, Michael Cahill, and families settled in Lanark County Ontario and then in 1829 became sharecroppers near March road on the Ottawa River, were he accidentally drowned  in 1846. This area is now called SHIRLEY'S BAY. After William's death his son, Edward, took over the family farm. Edward's brothers, Thomas and Paul, owned other farms nearby on the street now called SHIRLEY BLVD."

Bytown Gazette, Thurs. July 9, 1846, p. 2, col. 4: "A Coroner's Inquest was held on the 3rd inst., before Thos. Read, Esq. at the Big Bay, on the body of Mr. William Shirley, an old and respectable inhabitant of the township of Nepean. J.G. Goodman, Esq., was foreman of the jury. It appeared that the deceased had gone in his canoe to look at his fishing lines. Being away longer than usual, his son went in search of him, and found him dead in the river, and the canoe at a little distance. As the water was shallow, and Mr Shirley a good swimmer, it is supposed he must have been attacked by some sudden illness. Verdict - accidental death."
