of St George and Portland Jamaica
< Back to Caribbean Lineage Index

Note: Y-DNA from a descendant of the Edmund Shirley who married Mary Ivey Mann - family presented below - matches Y-DNA from descendants of Bernard Shirley esq (the brother of Henry Shirley of Hyde Hall). Despite this Edmund Shirley being previously identified as Edmund Skiers in error, the family below are still descended in the male line as has been stated in previously in the Shirleys of Jamaica book and on this website, but through Bernard Shirley, not through his brother Henry Shirley of Hyde Hall.

Edmund is likely instead the son of Bernard Shirley esq, and named as Legatee in his will dated 26 June 1806 (proven 14 Jan 1812)

"...I give to my said brother Henry Shirley his exors the sum of two hundred pounds stirling money current in Great Britain in trust for Edmund (Ed: spelling confirmed in death duty) my reputed natural son by a free mulatto woman named Brown now an apprentice to Mr Johnson carpenter in the said parish of St George in the said Island of Jamaica to be paid to him my said reputed natural son Edmund at his age of twenty one years or to [ ] by the said Henry Shirley his exors or admons in part or wholly laid out in the [ ] [ ] in the purchase of lands tenements [ ] or other heredits in the said Island of Jamaica in building [ ] if the said Henry Shirley his exors or admors shall think it for the benefit and advantage of my said reputed natural son all [ ] lands tenements [ ] houses and other [ ] with the appurts shall be conveyed and [ ]of the said sum of two hudred pounds as the said Henry Shirley his exors or admors shall not think proper to be laid out and applied as aforesaid shall be paid unto my said reputed natural son Edmund his [ ] exors and admors attending [ ] the nature and quality thereof to and [ ] and their own use and [ ] absolutely upon his attaining his age of twenty one years and I hereby will and [ ] that in the [ ] unil the said legacy or sum of two hundred pounds shall become [ ] and payable as aforesaid or until the day of the decease of my said reputed natural son Edmund in case he should [ ] happen to die interest for the said legacy or sum of two hundred pounds at the rate of five pounds per centum to be computed from the day of my decease shall be apaid to the said Henry Shirley his exors or admors in trust to be by him the said Henry Shirley his exors or admors applied and disposed of in for as towards the support mantenance education or proportion of my said reputed natural son Edmond in such way and manner as the said Henry Shirley his exors or admors shall think proper and I request and direct my said reputed natural son to take and use the sir name of Shirley..."[similar bequests to other ruputed children and to their mothers]And I hereby charge [ ] make liable all that my coffee plantation in the Island of Jamaica called Mount St Bernardhereinafter devised with the payment of of all the said annuities and legacies and the interest thereof hereintofore by me given or devised to be paid to or for the benefit of any person whosoever and I hereby direct that the [ ] several annuities and the interes of the sd several legacies shall be paid by quarterly payments the first quarterly payment therof[ ] portion to be made at the end of the calendar months from the day of my death out of the annual sum of eight hundred pounds payable to [ ]my heirs exors admors or assigns out of the [ ] proceeds of the [ ] of the produce of my sd plantation during such time as any part of the residue from me to my Brother the said Henry Shirley of all remain unpaid in manner aforesaid in the sd [ ] of defeazance to the sd mortgage made to my sd Brother so long as the said yearly sum of eight hundred pounds shall continue payable and from ?easter the said annual sum of eight hundred pounds shall cease to be payable then the said several annuities and interest hereby by me or [ ] to be paid and payable by like quarterly payments out of the rents [ ] and profits of my said plantations called Mount St Bernard adn I hereby direct that if any of the said natural children heretofore provided for shall die under the age of twenty one years the provisions hereintofore made for such of them as shall so die [ ]shall ot be raised or if raised shall [ ] into my personal estate. [the rest details bequests of all his personal estate unto his son Henry Shirley and then also half his land, plantations, slaves etc to son Henry Shirley and the other half to his daughter Anna Leicester wife of Capt Leicester, names brother Henry Shirley executor and guardian for son Henry Shirley] Codicil dated 26 June 1806 [names an exor and guardian for son Henry Shirley in the event of the death of Brother Henry Shirley, gives brother Henry Shirley all his coffee plantation in the parish of St George called Mount St Bernard, all slaves purchased for Mount St Bernard plantation to his brother etc, subject to certain annuity charges provided otherwise. The will and estate of Bernard Shirley was finally probated in 1817, the executor brother Henry Shirley died in the interim]

Note: Researchers had previously transcribed the mention as Edward Shirley (and not much else), but the British death duty records of the estate of Bernard Shirley confirms the spelling Edmund, rather than Edward Shirley

Also Note: Neither Edmund (nor his mother) are mentioned in the will of Henry Shirley, the brother of Bernard Shirley and executor of Bernard's estate. Henry's will was dated very shortly after Bernard's death, dated 24 November 1812. Barnard's will dated 1806 - Although other legatees of brother Bernard are found in Henry's will; The omission of Edmund Shirley's legacy in Henry's will can create confusion that Edmund Skiers (son of Henry, named in his will) was the same person as Edmund Shirley (son of Bernard). The omission of Edmund Shirley's L200 pound annuity bequest by Bernard Shirley in Henry Shirley's will can imply 2 things, either Edmund Shirley is dead, or instead he has attained majority age and has been granted the principle of his legacy prior to the will of Henry Shirley being written. Oddly, the death duty for Bernard Shirley's estate was not completed until 1817, many years after the deaths of both Bernard and his executor Henry Shirley. UK death duty records typically mention when a legatee has died in the interim and Bernard's death duty record makes no mention of Edmund's death - the death duty certainly being processed by the government long after the date of Henry Shirley's will being written in November 1812 - thus higher probability Edmund had attained majority age, demanded his legacy and was paid prior to Henry writing his will. Edmund Shirley, carpenter of St George Parish married Mary Ivey Mann in 1813. Again, it's very likely he received the value of the annuity at that point.

Grandpa's name was David, but I can't recollect Grandma's Christian name.... My Mother was one of five children -- David, Samuel, George, Matilda, and Maria (my mother).
