Richard Shirley of Ettington (son of John Shirley and Eleanor Willoughby)

The following may be in reference to the above Richard Shirley.

Contemporaries of Erasmus: A Biographical Register of the Renaissance and Reformation
edited by Thomas B Deutscher, Peter G Bietenholz

Richard Shurley documented 1509 - 27. The sole reference to Shurley (Shirley) in Erasmus' correspondence also provides the first glimpse into his career. It appears that early in 1509 Shurley was in Italy, where William Thale gave him certain of Erasmus' manuscripts that had been entrusted to him by Richard Pace (EP 244). Soon afterwards Shurley may have travelled to England, for he was presented to the living of Pembridge, Herefordshire on 29 Oct 1509. [Shirley Association editor's note: the reference to Pembridge is confused with another Richard Shurley]. Apparently he did not remain long in England, since in 1511 he was awarded a degree in canon law from the University of Turin. Later he was associated with the English hospice of St Thomas in Rome, where accounts for the period 1520 - 5 bearing his name have survived. Having served as the warden of the hospice from 1522 to 1523, Shurley was removed by order of Cardinal Wolsy, who instituted John Clerk, bishop of Bath and Wells in his place. From 1525 to 1526, however, Shurley was agin warden and according to Gasquet, he acted as warden when he served as the commisary to Bishop Clerk in 1527.
