William Rolfe Sherley Jr. Publican,
Inn Keeper, and Horse Dealer of Berkshire.
William Rolfe Sherley born ca. 1786 Woodcock Hill, Hertfordshire
(birthplace: 1851 census) to William
Rolfe Shirley Sr and wife Ann Salmon. He was baptised on
21 March 1787 at St Margaret Edgware Middlesex son of William
Shirley and Ann his wife; After William and Elizabeth Sherleys
marriage, they lived at Sunninghill. He declared bankruptcy on
8 May 1820 as an Inn Keeper and horse dealer in Stanwell; Between
1821 and 1824 they moved to the vicinity of Staines, Middlesex
where William Sherley was a horse dealer. By 1827 he was the
inn keeper at the New Inn at Stanwell, Middlesex. He was again
declared bankrupt on 31 May 1839 as a horse dealer at Staines
Middlesex; Enumerated in the 1841 census at Stanwell, Middlesex,
"near the New Inn", age 50, wife Elizabeth and son
William Jr and (servant?) Ann Richards age 17 living in the household;
By 1851 they are innkeepers at the Catherine Wheel Inn at Egham,
Surrey Co, age 65, with wife and 2 servants in the household.
The Catherine Wheel Inn was listed in the Parlimentary Survey
of 1650 as timber framed coaching inn with a brewhouse, a dozen
food lodging rooms and stabling for 50 horses. The entry in Mathews
Poor Law Map 1856 #418 reads: William Sherely tennant of His
Majesty, state-#442, Catherine Wheel Inn, garden stabling, yard,
pasture, cottage and garden #426 Humber Meadow. William Sherley
was still the inn keeper of the Catherine Wheel Inn at the time
of the 1861 census. He died in the winter of 1866 at Windsor,
Berkshire (Note: civil registration index says buried at Windsor
in 1866, but a William Sherley of same age at death was recorded
in parish records as buried at Chertsey Surrey 29 March 1866,
residence Egham - the same place of his marriage)

10th September 1829.
WILLIAM SHIRLEY . I am a publican and horse dealer , and
live at Staines. I had a stallion, called "The Farmer's
Glory;" the prisoner was in my employ for two seasons, to
take the horse round to the different farmers, and to different
markets - I engaged to give him 5l. for the season, 1s. for every
mare that was covered, and he received 3l. 10s. every Monday
morning to pay his expences, when he came back at the end of
the week he was to give an account of what he had spent; if he
had any left he was to return it - if he had spent more it was
paid him; when he returned on the Sunday I used to ask him what
he received - he said, "None at all," which was the
case every Sunday this season; he never paid me any; any money
that he received, it was his duty to bring to me; I think he
returned me that answer for fourteen or fifteen weeks - the last
time I paid him was on the 6th of July, when he left me with
the 3l. 10s., and never returned; I received my horse back, I
think, on the 17th, with a note in his hand-writing- I waited
till the following Sunday, and then sent a person into the country;
on the Friday I went to Banbury, where I found the prisoner in
custody, and brought him to London; the constable had taken a
letter from him, and a book, before I saw him; he afterwards
gave me a statement of some sums, which he had never paid me,
but I have only a copy of it here.
Cross-examined by MR. PHILLIPS. Q. Were the stallions yours
or not? A. Yes, I purchased them; I had three of them; the first
I bought was a year ago - this is a bill which I had printed;
the prisoner was to lead "The Wanderer" and "The
Farmer's Glory;" I was a bankrupt since I bought them -
I have got my certificate; my effects were sold in May last -
it was in March I sent the prisoner out with the stallion; the
stallion was bought in by my friends for me; it was sold by auction,
and the assignees got the proceeds of it; my friends have no
partnership in these stallions - I had settled with the prisoner
at the termination of last season; there was no running account
- we settled every week: sometimes there were expences of shoeing
and physic for which he paid a shilling or two, which I paid
him - he did pay Mr. Coleman 1l. 5s., but he always had money
in advance - what he paid out of his pocket he was repaid the
next week; he behaved very well the first season, or I should
not have employed him again. I have read over this book to my
sorrow, which the prisoner kept; the names are down here; these
sums are entered as not having been paid; they are entered that
the parties might be called upon who had not paid - if he received
any money he ought to have paid me, but if he had not I was to
call on them; if he had not put down those names I should have
beard of it, as those gentlemen were often sending their mares.

Married Elizabeth Moore on 12 December 1808 at Egham,
St John Surrey. The license was witnessed by William Sherley
and John Moore, father of Elizabeth. William Rolfe Sherley was
a batchelor from New Windsor, Berkshire Co. She was age 61 in
1851 census;
William Rolf Sherley of the parish of New Windsor in the
county of Berks batchelor and Elizabeth Moore a minor were married
in this church by license this twelfth day of December 1808 by

St. Martin in the Field, London.
"Family tradition has it that at some time Ann was
employed as a wet nurse to the Royal family at Windsor and that
Frederick was Librarian at the Castle. Unfortunately records
at the Castle do not confirm this. In 1859, Ann, her husband
and their 6 children and a newly acquired son in law, set sail
for Auckland New Zealand a board the sailing ship "JURA"."

he is living at Hansworth Road, Twickenham. Unmarried in 1851,
living with his brother James Sherley. In 1861, his occupation
is "Veterinary Surgeon". In the 1871 census he lived
at "Devereux Villa" Hanworth Road, Twickenham, Middlesex.
Willliam is then a "Dealer in horses" and his wife
is Rebecca. Their staff consisted of a cook, housemaid and a
nurse. Same enumeration in 1881, age 54; He died 16 January 1894,
buried at Whitton, London borough of Hounslow, age 69 (tombstone)

to New Zealand with Mary Sidwell, daughter of his sister, Ann.
Mary Sidwell who was his niece kept house for him. They had 5

I am a non-member, but I have some additional information
(about my only Shirley ancestor!) which adds to that provided
in the Buckinghamshire/non-members section on your site by George
Edward Shirley of Australia and his daughter, Mrs. Young. Is
there a way to forward this to them, or a way of posting it on
the site? (I was not able to find a contact link for this contributor
to contact them directly, and the Query Board did not seem an
appropriate place, as this is an addition to your existing resources
rather than a query.)
My additional information concerns one of the children of:
2. William Rolfe Sherley (b. Oct 22, 1762) who m. Ann Salmon
(Oct 2, 1784). They lived at Lapland Farm, Brill (Bucks).
Namely, their daughter:

Mary Sherley was b. c. 1788/9 (estimate from her age at death).
In 1810, she married Henry MONK (b. 9 April 1786, Brill; d.
185165) in Brill. The following is a transcript of the parish
register entry for their marriage, provided by the Bucks Family
History Society in the UK:

In 1838, Mary Monk (née Sherley) died in Brill. The
Bucks FHS parish register transcript is as follows:
Brill All Saints
16 Jan 1839 Mary MONK aged 50 of Brill
However, a transcript of gravestones in Brill churchyard (at
the Society of Genealogists in London) gives Mary's date of death
as 11 January 1839.
Henry Monk was a carpenter in Brill, as was his younger brother
Thomas. Despite the description in the marriage register as 'Henry
Monk of High Wycombe', he was definitely born in Brill, where
his parents (Henry Monk snr. and Jane, née Robins) married
in 1779 and then continued to live. Possibly he was in High Wycombe
as an apprentice around the time of his marriage.
Henry Monk snr (b. c. 1748/9, place not known, d. 19 November
1825 in Brill, aged 76) was a licensed victualler (or publican)
at The Swan Inn, The Green, Brill. Here, there is a property
connection with the Sherleys. I contacted Graham Parker of the
Brill Society (based in the village) a year ago, and, by coincidence,
it turned out that he lives in Coronation Cottage - a rebuilt
version of the cottage that used to be tied The Swan Inn. The
daughter of Graham's next-door neighbour - resident of The Swan
Inn, which is now a house - had researched the history of the
inn (and changes of
ownership) through several centuries at the Aylesbury (Bucks
County) records office, and Graham was able to send me a copy
of her findings. The extracts that will interest anyone researching
Sherleys in the Brill area are as

7.4.1795 Mortgage between Henry Monk and Ann Salmon and William
Sherley for £120. Prior to Henry Monk, Isaac White was
the tenant of The Swan Inn, John Saunders was the tenant of the
little cottage.

Elizabeth, Edmund and Ann Monk (above) were the 1st, 2nd and
4th children on Henry Monk snr and Jane (née Robins) -
the 3rd was Henry Monk jnr, who married Mary Sherley. Elizabeth,
Edmund and Ann never married and (it seems) continued to run
the Inn into advanced age! The gravestones commemorating them
in Brill churchyard are still legible. Their two brothers who
did marry
- Henry jnr and Thomas - were both carpenters; their sister
Mary married a widower, William Welford.
In 1887, 'part of' The Swan Inn was sold to brewers from Aylesbury.
Thereafter, the conveyancing information I was sent relates only
to the cottage, not the Inn.
It seems possible that Henry Monk snr became the tenant of
the Inn on his marriage (1779), shortly after it was bought by
John Salmon. I have not been able to discover Henry' place of
birth or anything about his wider family, so it would be useful
to know if he had an earlier connection with the Salmons.
Henry Monk jnr and Mary (née Sherley) had the following
children:
William Monk, chr. 3 November 1811, Brill; d. 1881, Thame
district (= probably Brill). Never married.
Henry Monk (Henry 3), chr. 6 January 1813, Brill d. 17 January
1881, Kentish Town, North London, aged 68. Carpenter. m. 23 April
1838, Marylebone, London, to Jane Smith (b. 22 October 1815,
Pentonville, London) daughter of the late John Smith (b.??, d.
1819), 'chirographer' (legal draftsman) or possibly 'attorney',
the Temple, London, and Julia (née Julia Lepetit Pharez)
(b. 1785, d. 1845).
Jane Monk, chr. 22 October 1814, Brill d. 1901, Thame district
(Brill),
aged 87.
Had one child outside marriage (Emma, b. 1833, Brill), then
m. James Brooks, farmer, of Brill, 11 February 1839, and had
6 more.
Michael Monk, b. 1821/2, Brill d. 20 April 1832, 10yrs
Mary Anne Monk b. 25 March 1827, Brill d. after 1841: possibly
1842,
Thame district (probably Brill).

My connection with all these people is that Henry Monk 'jnr'
(Henry 2) and Mary Sherley are my g-g-g-g-grandparents; Henry
Monk 3 (who moved to London and married there in the 1830s) and
Jane, née Smith are my g-g-g-grandparents.
