Anthony Shirley, esq. of Preston, in Sussex, who was created a Baronet in 1665, was son of Thomas Shirley, esq. by Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of Drew Stapley, esq. of London, grandson of Thomas Shirley, esq. of Preston, and great-grandson of Anthony Shirley, who was second son of William Shirley, esq. of Wiston, and lineally derived from the Shirleys of Staunton Harold. The baronet m. Anne, daughter of Sir Richard Onslow, knt, of West Clandon, in Surrey, and dying about 1683, left with a daughter, Elizabeth', and a son Richard:

Anthony Sherley appears to have taken an active part in public affairs during the usurpation, and to have been by no means a loyal subject. His father's connection, by marriage with the Stapley family might have been the cause of this. In the Thurloe State papers, Volume iv., pp. 161 to 190, there are frequent allusions to him; and a letter is given from Major-General Goffe to Secretary Thurloe, and dated Lewes, November 7th, 1655; in which he says :—" I have putt in among the Commissioners for the execution of the Orders of his Highness, and the Councell, for the preservation of the Peace of the Commonwealth, Mr. Anthony Shirley, who I heer is a very honest man. If his relationship to Sir Richard Onslow"—he married his daughter Anne—" doe not hinder his acting, he may be useful. I intend to waight upon him to-morrow.'' And in another letter to the same Secretary, the general says: —" If the Commission of the Peace be yet unfinished, I desire that there may be added Mr. Anthony Shirley.'' New Info: He was apprenticed to Charles Fox of the Leathersellers Company on 30 October 1651 for 7 years, his father named as Thomas Sherley of Preston Sussex esquire. Thomas Shirley was granted his freedom on 8 January 1661 and was recorded as liveryman (full member of the Company) on 24 June 1664; He married Mary Snatt by license in 1667, he was then a resident of St Saviors Southwark, citizen and leatherseller. He was age 31 at the time. (Editor: The tradesman class of this person bothered me at first. All his brothers and sisters were landed gentry - However, the Leathersellers guild records explicitly state he was son of Thomas Sherley of Preston esq and his father's 1654 PCC will bequeathed him 200 pounds when he finished his apprenticeship - which according to the Leathersellers guild began in 1651 and lasted for 7 years - so it all fits)

married Mary Snatt by Vicar General license dated 9 May 1667; She was age about 21 and was granted consent by her uncle Stephen Snatt of Lewes.
