Anthony Scherley was born on 24 August 1842 at Baden, Germany. He was the son of Jacob Scherley and Sybil Holmer. Anthony Scherley married Margaret Dendinger, daughter of Ferdinand Dendinger and Marguerite Meyer, on 13 October 1866 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Thompson Township, Seneca, Ohio. Anthony Scherley married Josephine Shoup on 22 January 1869 at Huron, Ohio. Anthony Scherley married Mary Anna Schreiner, daughter of Michael (Michaelis) Schreiner Jr. and Mary (Marie) Anna Koby (Cobi), on 2 July 1878 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Thompson Township, Seneca, Ohio. Anthony Scherley died on 12 November 1928 at Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio, at age 86. He was buried on 15 November 1928 at Row 20, Reed Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. He He was the only surviving child of Jacob & Sybil Scherley when they arrived in America.

He had 6 brothers and sisters that died during the passage to America. What has been passed down is that Jacob's brothers and sisters died from scurvy. Not enough green veggie's in their diet during the ship's transit. Family Legends says that Jacob, father of Anthony promised to God that if he allowed his last son to survive the passage, that he would build a church that could last 100 years. He and a Landoll, built a stone chapel that the circuit rider priests from St. Reigel, OH used. This Landoll would put the priest up at his house. Again legend says that the chapel is or was part of Sorrowful Mother Shrine.
