Francis Shirley is likely a son of Paul Shirley who held lands of Clowater county Carlow , as was recorded in the 1841 marriage settlement document for Paul's eldest son John Shirley of Coolcullen county Kilkenny. Francis Shirley is mentioned in this 1841 document as 'of Coolcullen' but his relationship to the elder Paul Shirley is not stated.

Francis Shirley of Clowater, county Carlow Ireland. born about 1822 (age 77 at time of death in 1899) In the 1850/1851 Griffiths Valuation, Francis Shirley held townlands of Clowater in Ballyellin parish, Clonygoose parish and Lorum parish. 28 acres of Clowater, Ballyyellin parish (house, offices and land) were held by landlord Paul Shirley and Francis Shirley his tenant, while 16 acres of land at Clowater were leased to him by the Viscount Beresford. In Clonygoose parish, Francis leased 11 acres of land in Clowater from Paul Shirley, the landlord. In Lorum parish, Francis leased 29 acres of land in Clowater then held by the Viscount Beresford. Francis Shirley was also listed as holding land at Cloydagh county Carlow. In 1864, Francis witnessed the marriage of Anne Shirley, daughter of Paul Shirley to Richard Colclough (She was likely his sister). He died 1 February 1899 at Clowater, county Carlow. His death record states his was age 77 (born 1822), farmer and a widower at the time of death of 'Senile decay'. His son William Shirley was the informant at death. Buried at Lorum Church, Bagenalstown

married Jane Ashmore say about 1844. She is identified with Francis in civil registration of her children. She died 19 June 1893 at Clowater. Her death record states she was married, wife of a farmer, age 68 (born about 1825). Her daughter Jane Shirley was the informant at the time of death. Buried at Lorum Church, Bagenalstown

1892 March 12 - Carlow Sentinel pg 2 - Shocking Death of a Farmer - We regret to record the particulars of a very sad fatal accident which occurred on Thursday last, resulting in the almost instantaneous death of Mr John Shirley, a respectable farmer, who resided at Slyguff, near Bagnalstown. It appears he was engaged loading some straw near his residence and was on the cart tying down the load when the rope suddenly broke and he was thrown with great violence against the gable end of a house. His neck was broken by the force of the collision and he only survived a few minutes. The regret at the sad occurrence in the district is deep and universal, and much sympathy is felt for his bereaved widow.

William Shirley of Ballykeefe is identified as the correct son of Francis Shirley of Clowater based on lineage submitted to Shirley Association by his daughter Margaret Shirley of Ballykeefe, Cuffes Grange Kilkenny, born 1923. Surely she would know the name of her grandfather Francis Shirley of Clowater.

Limetree House and 173 acres of land in 1950 (Irish Independent newspaper ad, but as Bessie Ida Shirley Holmes); She died 7 December 1974 at Limetree House Ballykeefe, buried Ballykeeffe Cemetery (Sunday Independent newspaper)
