3(i). Paul Shirley b. 1786. He was a farmer of Knockabranna Co Carlow at the time of his marriage in 1815; occupation Farmer Copanare Cloydagh. Paul died 21 Jul 1863, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow. Paul was left the tenancy of Kilfoyles farm in Coon in his fathers will. See Deed of marriage settlement 3rd October 1815

1815 [Registry of Deeds 1869] - To the Registrar appointed by Act of Parliament for Registering Deeds, Leases and so forth. A memorial of an indented deed of marriage settlement bearing date the third day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifteen made between Paul Shirley of Knochabrannah in the County of Carlow farmer of the one part John Shirley Francis Edwards and Jane Edwards daughter of the said Francis Edwards of the other part. Reciting that a marriage was then shortly to be had and solemnized between the said Paul Shirley and Jane Edwards and that the said Paul Shirley and Francis Edwards for and in consideration of the said intended marriage portion and provision the same did hereinafter ________ had __________ mutually covenanted and agreed in manner and form following that was to say that the said Paul Shirley did thereby agree with the said Jane Edwards that he the said Paul Shirley should and would by the first day of November the next ensuing the date thereof marry wed and take to wife the said Jane Edwards should she thereunto consent and the said Jane Edwards did thereby agree with the said Paul Shirley that she should and would before the said first day of November the next ensuing wed and take to husband the said Paul Shirley should he thereunto covenant and reciting that the said Paul Shirley did for himself his heirs and executors and administrators covenant promise and agree to with the said Francis Edwards his heirs executors and administrators to well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Jane Edwards her executors administrators or assigns the just and full sum of one hundred pounds sterling provided always upon conditions that the said Jane Edwards should happen to survive him the said Paul Shirley and not otherwise, which said sum of one hundred pounds sterling was thereby agreed by the said parties to be jointure or provision out of the said Paul Shirley's estate as also of all other provision claim or demand of the said Paul Shirley's personal estate it being the meaning of the parties to said settlement that the said Jane Edwards should happen to survive the said Paul Shirley and upon that contingency only and not otherwise should have receive and be paid immediately after the death of the said Paul Shirley out of the said Paul Shirley's real or personal estate provided that nothing therein shall hinder or disable or be construed to hinder or disable the said Paul Shirley from leaving any additional portion to the said Jan Edwards at the time of his death by will or otherwise that he the said Paul Shirley should or might think proper. And further reciting that in condition of the said intended marriage portion and provision he the said John Shirley did grant convey settle and secure unto the said Paul Shirley all that and those rents issues and profits of the lands of Caon or Bellmount in the County of Kilkenny then demised to Edward Butler and John Bradley and from and after expiration of their several leases thereof that then and in such case he the said Paul Shirley was to have and receive twenty three acres of said lands Butlers holding and the Brow field and big meadow then demised to said John Bradley. To hold to the said Paul Shirley his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever he paying the head rent thereof and five pounds on the fall of each life and which said deed contained all other clauses and consensuals as in such cases are usual and which deed as to the due execution thereof is witnessed by John Watters and Richard Watters both of Clogrennan in the County of Carlow farmers and this memorial is to the execution thereof by the said Paul Shirley is witnessed by the said John Watters snd Thomas Richardson of the town and County of Carlow writing clerk. Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of John Watters Thomas Richardson Paul Shirley. The above named John Watters maketh oath and sayeth he is subscribing witness to the deed of which the above writing is a memorial and also to said memorial and sayeth that he saw said deed duly executed by all the parties thereto and saw this memorial duly executed by the above named Paul Shirley and sayeth the name John Watters subscribed as a witness to the said deedin this memorial ______ is this deponents proper name and handwriting John Watters. Sworn before me this 17th day of October 1836 at Carlow in the County of Carlow by virtue of a commission to me directed out of His Majesties High Court and Chancery in Ireland as a Master Extraordinary in and for the said County and I know deponent. 1836 LW&T of John Shirley. "...I further will and bequeath to my son Abraham Shirley the profit rent now arising from Kilfoyle's farm in Coon, being eight pounds ten shillings annually to be possessed by same Abraham Shirley during the continuance of same forever. I further will that Paul Shirley my son the present occupier of same farm in Coon is not to be disturbed from its possession by my son Abraham Shirley or any person representing him provided the annual interest of eight pounds ten shillings be paid regularly to same Abraham Shirley or his representation..."

4(ii). Thomas Shirley b. Approx.1823, occupation Hill Farmer, Clogrenane. Thomas died 1 Aug 1900, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow, buried: 5 Aug 1900, Clody Ch, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow. Lived in Clogrennan, Cloydagh. Thomas is buried in the churchyard of Clody Ch Clogrenan, Carlow. inside the ruined walls in the same grave as his wife Mary Jane. The tombstone also records Sarah Henrietta Booth, buried in Railyard in Castlecomer, and John, Francis, Alice and John who died young.

married Mary Jane Jeffers on 9 Sep 1868, in Staplestown Parish Church, Co. Carlow; She was b. approx. 1851, Co Carlow, Ireland, age 50 in 1901 census household, widow at Clogrennan Townlands Co Carlow. She was the daughter of Thomas Jeffers and Mary Jeffers. She died. 8 Apr 1936, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow, buried: Clody Ch, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow.Believed to have Dutch parents, Jane is buried in the same grave as her husband inside the ruined walls of Clody church; In the 1901 Census of Ireland, Jane lived in the Clogrenane Townland in the parish of Cloydah with Fred, Lizzie, Carrie, Lavinia and Augusta. The 6 roomed house is described as 2nd class, the farm had 12 outbuildings.

5(i). Paul William Nassau Shirley , b. 12 Jul 1869, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow. He was a clergyman, Church of England at St George West Grinstead, Sussex in 1901 census. He was the rector of the parish of Glynn Antrim in 1911 census. He became Archdeacon of Connor, Belfast. Paul was at Barnes Green, near Horsham Surrey and transferred to Antrim Rd. Belfast. Buried Clonallon Cemetery, Warrenpoint

married Jane Eugenie Josephine Harrison about 1897 (married 14 years in 1911 census). Her mother Jane Harrison was living with the family in 1911 census. They had 2 children.

5(ii). Thomas Frederic Shirley b. 2 Feb 1871, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow, occupation Farmer Fontstown Athy. age 30 in widowed mother's 1901 census household; Religion: Ch of Ireland; Farmer's son. He died 6/8/1943 or 7, buried: Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow. Witness at the second wedding of his sister Sarah Henrietta Leacock Dec 20 th 1911 St Mary's Church Castlecomer. Frances: Described as widow on marriage entry with Frederic Shirley. Address as Clogrenan Hill. Address in burial record given as Blackhall nr. Honeyhouse. Age at death 71

He married Frances Emily Carson on 17 Feb 1919, in Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow, b. Approx. 1890, (daughter of Thomas Bolton, ) d. ? Jan 1961, Blackhall., buried: 16 Jan 1961, Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow.

She married (3) George Thompson . Susan remarried after the death of William. William: Described as widower on marriage entry for Susan Isabella. Address given as Black Castle Maganey. 5(v). James Francis Shirley born about 1876 in Carlow Ireland. He was married and enumerated at 54 Clonroche Co Wexford in 1901, occupation: General Merchant, and then at 6 Centaur Street Carlow (town) in 1911 census, age 35, Hotel proprietor. Member: Church of Ireland. He and his son Albert went through immigration in Canada in November 1919. Emigrated to Ontario Canada

Age 21 in widowed mother's 1901 census household; Religion: Ch of Ireland; not married; She married James Connor on 28 Apr 1903, in Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow, (son of James Connors ) occupation Farmer. Anne died 5 Mar 1940, Clogrennan, Carlow, Co. Carlow, buried: 7 Mar 1940, Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow. In the 1901 Census Of Ireland Lizzie lived at home in Clogrenane with her widowed mother, brother and 3 sisters. James: Witnesses at the wedding were Robert Conner and Carrie Shirley.

5(viii). Sarah Henrietta Shirley b. 12 Feb 1882, Clogrennan Hill, Carlow, Co. Carlow, occupation Farmers Wife. She married George Alfred Leacock , 6 Sep 1899, in Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow; b. 21 Nov 1865, Gurteen, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, (son of Thomas Leacock and Sarah Hogan ) occupation Farmer, d. Feb 1910, Gurteen, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, buried: Colliery Ch. Moneenroe, Castlecomer. She married (2) John Booth , 11 Dec 1911, in St Mary's Church Castlecomer Co.Kilkenny, b. 31 Aug 1870, Knockadogue., (son of John Booth and Sarah Smyth ) occupation Constable Royal Irish Con, d. 4 May 1957, Dundrum, Co Dublin., buried: Colliery Ch. Moneenroe, Castlecomer. Sarah died May 1922, Dublin, Ireland, buried: 17 May 1922, Colliery Ch. Moneenroe, Castlecomer. Died from chilbirth complications a few days after her daughter Second marriage to John Booth took place in St Mary's Ch. Castlecomer, John is described as a widower son of John Booth in the parish records. Sarah is listed on the tombstone of her father Cluddy Ch ( derelict) inside the ruined walls as buried in Railyard, Castlecomer. George: Parish entry reads :- April 1st 1866 Baptism , Nov.21 st 1865 Born was George Alfred. The parents Thomas Leycocke and Sarah, formerly Hogan of Gurteen sponsors John Smith, Lizzie Wilson and Robert Wilson The 1901 Census of Ireland Lists Georges home in Gurteen as 2 nd class with 5 rooms, he is also listed as having the house next door which is uninhabited and some land in Cloneen.The farm had a stable, coach house, 3 cow houses, a calf house, a piggery, a dairy and a store. George spoke Irish and English. John: Known to be fond of the drink, was thrown out by Sarah. Then lived in Kiltown with Philip and Helen Stone. Became senile and blind and entered a home in Dundrum.

Age 16 in widowed mother's 1901 census household; Religion: Ch of Ireland; not married; She married James Dimond , 9 Oct 1909, in Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow, (son of James Dimond ) occupation Farmer in Innistigue. Sophia buried: pre 1993. Known as Carrie. In the 1901 Census Of Ireland Carrie lived in Clogrenane Marriage witness was Augusta Shirley. James: Marriage record in Cloydagh Ch. records occ. as farmer in Innistigue.

4(ii). Anne Shirley b. 1827, Copanare, Cloydagh, Co. Carlow. She married Richard Colclough , 28 Sep 1864, in Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow, b. pre 1845, (son of William Colclough ) occupation Farmer, d. Before 1901. In the 1901 Census Anne lived with James and Caroline Shirley, her age is listed as 74, a widow. Richard is described as a widower on the marriage record to Anne Shirley Address on marriage cert is given as Powerstown parish, Clonmelish

4(iii). Susan Shirley b. pre 1845, Copanare, Cloydagh, Co. Carlow. She married Edward Watters , 7 Feb 1866, in Cloydagh Ch. Clogrennan, Co. Carlow; He was b. pre 1848. Susan died 1866-1868.
