Alexander Shirley born about 1806; He was at various times a laborer and gardener; Died 27 Nov 1878, age 72 at Dublin Ireland; buried at St Catherine's Parish Living at Ardee St Dublin at time of death. (a John Shirly was born to Joseph and Floriana Shirley chr 12 Aug 1804 at Taney, another son Bernard chr 1816 at Taney, Elizabeth 1823, Margaret 1827; Joseph of Dumdrum, buried 1838 at Taney, age 58 )

1(i). John Winter Shirley born 21 Apr 1836; christened 22 May 1836 at Taney Parish, son of Alexander (laborer) and Elizabeth Shirley of Owenstown. Occupation: silk weaver, living at 100 Townsend St Dublin at time of marriage, son of Alexander Shirley, carpenter; living at 78 Cork Street at various births of children.

married Eliza Leary on 2 June 1860 at St Marks Parish, Dublin; She was the daughter of John leary of 100 Townsend St Dublin; The witness to their marriage were Andrew Drummond (for husband) and William Carbry (for wife)

2(i). Eliza Jane Shirley b 4 July 1861; chr 14 Aug 1861 at St Peter's Parish, Dublin (parents: John and Eliza Jane Shirley of 1 Excheques St, Dublin)

2(ii). Joseph Shirley b 27 may 1863; chr 21 June 1863 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (to John Winder Shirley and wife Eliza of 59 Cork St); living in Cork St Hospital, Merchants Quay in the 1911 Dublin census, age 47 (no children in HH)

married Harriett Jane _____, age 32 in 1911 Dublin census

2(iii). Ellen Shirley b 1 Oct 1865; chr 18 Oct 1865 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin; She likely died young (to John and Eliza Shirley of 59 Cork St)

2(i). Harriett Shirley b 24 Apr 1867 Dublin (born to John Shirley and Eliza Leary of 59 Cork St)

2(ii). Anne Shirley b 1 Aug 1869; chr 19 Sept 1869 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John Winder Shirley and Eliza Leary of 2 Brook Lawn Cottages, Love Lane)

2(iii). Charles Shirley b 19 Aug 1871; chr 1871 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John Winder Shirley and Eliza Leary of 7 Brown St); He was a carpet layer living with brother James and sister Adelaide Carroll in the 1911 Dublin census, age38, single.

2(iv). Ellen Shirley b 28 Nov 1873; chr 28 Dec 1873 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John Winder Shirley and Eliza Leary of Brown St). She died 12 June 1950 at Marrickville New South Wales according to a death certficate filed there. The certificate indicates Ellen was a widow, age 76, born Dublin Ireland daughter of John Shirley (a weaver) and wife Elizabeth Leary. Further, the certificate indicates Ellen married George Henry Timmins at Dublin Ireland, and also mentions she was age 25 at the time of marriage. Children: Mary E. age 50, Alexander age 41, Adelaide age 36 (alive), 5 males and 2 females deceased. The certificate also mentions Ellen Shirley Timmins had been 22 years in New South Wales at the time of death. She was buried at the Church of England Cemetery Rookwood

2(v). William John Shirley b 12 Dec 1875; chr 7 Jan 1876 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John Shirley and Eliza Leary of Brown St); He was a ticket taker of 127 St Stephen's Green, son of John Shirley at time of marriage; He was a bath attendant living at 6 Bloomfield Park, Dublin at time of birth of son Arthur. He is living with brother Joseph and wife (He is married but wife and children not in HH) in 1911 Dublin census, age 34, attendant in turkish bath

married Georgina Jane Richardson on 4 October 1897 at St Peter's Parish, Dublin, dau of George Richardson, dec'd of 127 St Stephens Green; Witnesses at marriage were Alice Richardson (for groom) and Robert Francies Hilton (for bride); She is living alone with her two children at York Street, Mansion House district in the 1911 Dublin census (oddly the listing says she is a widow)

3(i). Arthur John Shirley born 29 July 1899; chr 20 Aug 1899 at St Peter's Parish, Dublin; He is living with his grandmother Sarah Richardson in the 1901 Dublin census; Not found in the 1911 Dublin census.

3(ii). George Shirley born about 1900 Dublin Ireland; age 0 in the 1901 Dublin census; living with mother, age 11 in the 1911 Dublin census.

3(iii). William Shirley born about 1903 Dublin Ireland; living with mother, age 8 in the 1911 Dublin census

2(vi). James Shirley b 15 May 1878; chr 10 July 1878 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John Shirley and Eliza Leary of 18 Cork St); He was a wine porter living with brother Charles and sister Adelaide Carroll in 1911 Dublin census, age 34, single.

2(vii). Robert Henry Shirley b 23 Sep 1880; chr 3 Nov 1880 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John Shirley and Eliza Leary of 78 Cork St)

2(viii). Adelaide Shirley b 4 Jan 1883; christened 21 Feb 1883 at St Catherine's Parish, Dublin (born to John and Eliza Shirley of 83 Cork St); married _____Carroll. Living with her numerous children (married but husband not in HH) with brothers Charles and James in 1911 Dublin census.

Caution: a John Shirley and wife Eliza Doyle are having children in Dublin in early 1880s

1(ii). Susan Shirley born 27 Nov 1837; christened 5 Dec 1837 at Taney Parish, Dublin to Alexander (laborer) and Elizabeth Shirley of The Lodge Owenstown House, Dublin.

1(iii). Esther Shirley born 24 June 1840; christened 6 Aug 1840 at St Peter's Parish, Dublin to Alexander and Elizabeth Shirley of Donnybrook; She married Frederick Webb son of William Webb on 2 Sept 1872 at St Luke's Parish, Dublin; She was named dau of Alexander Shirley, laborer, living at 6 Ardee St. Dublin; Alexander Shirley witnessed for groom; John Shirley witnessed for bride.

1(iv). William Shirley born 20 July 1843; christened 20 Aug 1843 at St Peter's Parish, Dublin to Alexander (gardner) and Elizabeth Shirley of Miltown, Dublin

1(v). Joseph Shirley born 29 Sep 1849; christened 28 Oct 1849 at St Luke's Parish Dublin to Alexander and Elizabeth Shirley of 2 Grace's Court Dublin

1(vi). Elizabeth Shirley born 28 Dec 1851; christened 11 Jan 1852 at St Luke's Parish, Dublin to Alexander (laborer) and Elizabeth Shirley of 31 New Row South, Dublin; She married Crpl. James Joseph of the 15th regt, son of James Joseph on 4 July 1870 at St Jude's Parish, Kilmainham City of Dublin, her father was named Alexander Shirley, laborer of Richmond, witnesses were John Roache (for groom) and Esther Shirley (for bride)
