  Lord Culpeper (1600-1660), inherited his fathers share of the Virginia Company and left England in the autumn of 1623. He was first married to Philippa Snelling of West Grinstead in Sussex England. She was the daughter of Sir George Snelling and his wife, Cecilia Sherley, daughter of Thomas Shirley and Philippa Caryll. This Cecilia is a 3rd cousin to Cecilia, daughter of Sir Thomas Sherley, the elder, who married Lord Delaware West. The Cecilias are 5th cousins to George Shirley of Ettington who married Frances Berkeley, daughter of Henry Lord Berkeley.

John Culpeper, 1565-1635  of Feckenham, England

1. *Thomas Culpeper, married Katherine Saint Leger, July 10, 1628 Ulcombe Kent Co. England. He was admitted to Middle Temple May 7, 1621, member of Virginia Company 1623, an original patentee of the Northern Neck of Virginia Sept 18, 1649.

Children:

(a).  Mary Culpeper 1629, d. 1630

(b). Anne Culpeper 1630 d. 1695, buried York Co. England. She married Christopher Danby of York Co. England.

(c). John Culpeper 1633, presumably died young

(d). Frances Culpeper, baptisted Hollingbourne, May 27, 1634. Married 1st Capt Samuel Stephens. He was appted. Gov. of Albemarle, died about 1669. (no children)... She married  2nd, William Berkeley, Knt., bapt. July 16, 1608 Twickernham, Middlesex England. He became Gov of Virginia and died 1677. She married 3rd, Philip Ludwell, born 1638, Governor of North Carolina and   South Carolina, returned to England about 1700, buried Stratford le Bow, Middlesex.

(e). Capt Alexander Culpeper, Esq, granted office of Surveyor General of Virginia Oct 25, 1671 on return to England. He died 1694, unmarried.

(f). John Culpeper, Gent., Surveyor General of South Carolina, later of Albemarle Co. North Carolina; He participated in Culpeper's Rebellion, tried for treason in England. He married 1st, Judith___,  2nd Margaret___ Bird,  3rd. Sarah Mayo.

2. *John Culpeper, believed to be the clerk of Northumberland Co. VA

Thomas and John Culpeper owned the ship "THOMAS AND JOHN". Thomas SHIRLEY came to America on this ship in 1635!

Thomas Culpeper, 2nd Lord Culpeper, Governor of Virginia, was the son of John and Judith Culpeper.
