1805; Taxed in Scott Co KY in 1805 and 1806 for 176 acres on
Leconnt's Run; Emumerated in the 1810 census (and tax list) for
Scott Co KY; Named in the 1817 LW&T of his father Argeland
Shirley (as Edward Shirley) He was enumerated in both the 1830
tax and census list for Fayette Co Kentucky; In that year, he
was taxed for 71 acres held in Scott Co KY and for 2 slaves;
While still a resident of Fayette Co KY, he was granted a BLM
warrant for land in Boone Co Indiana on 16 September 1835. He
was age 62 in 1850 census living in Boone Co IN; He died 2 January
1860 at Fayette, Boone Co. Indiana, age 76; His will was probated
on 22 January 1860 at Vermilion Co IN; Buried at Mount Tabor
Cemetery, Boone Co IN

Edmund Shirley, aged 76 years, 9 months, and 4 days, died at
his residence in Fayette, Perry Township at six O'Clock on Monday
evening, the 21st. Another of the old pioneers of Boone has passed
away to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler
ever returns. Mr. Shirley was born in Culpepper Co. VA and moved
to Kentucky at the age of eleven years where he reside until
his removal to Indiana. He came to Boone County twenty-four years
ago and has resided here up to the time of his death. He passed
through all the privations and hardships incident to the early
settlement of our county... witnessed its gradual growth and
prosperity and lived to see the wilderness of his earlier days
transformed into beautiful fields and thriving villages. At the
early age of fifteen, Mr. Shirley connected himself with the
Regular Predestinarian Baptist Church, of which he continued
a member up to the time of his death. His walk through life was
marked by that quiet regularity and honesty which characterizes
the members of that denomination, with none of the false glare
of pretended Christianity, and the sterling integrity in his
dealings with his fellow-man offered the best evidence of true
religion. Politically, Mr. Shirley was a member of the Old Whig
Party until that organization ceased to exist. After the old
party issues had been buried, and questions presented themselves
upon which the great leaders of both the old parties occupied
common ground, he placed himself within the Old Line Organization,
and continued there throughout the rest of his life. Mr. Shirley
had been feeble for some time; but was not seriously ill until
a couple of weeks ago, when he was attacked with Erysipelas in
the face, which progressed so rapidly as to defy the physician's
skill. Mr. Shirley leaves nine children living... three in Howard
Co. two in Hendricks Co. and one in Missouri. Three more are
dead. His remains were interred in Fayette burying ground on
Tuesday in the presence of a large circle of relatives and friends.
His epitaph should be "A good man has been gathered to his
fathers".
