info from Dan and Terri Shirley:

John William Shirley  was born in Mississippi . He stayed in Tupelo all his life.  His profession was in the postal service.  It was somewhat prestigious as he made around $75 a week during the depression.  He had five children----- Ruth, Milward (called Mickey and died when he was seven), John William II (my father  D.O.B. Nov. 27, 1921), Van, and Rachel.  My grandpa, Van, and Rachel died in April, 1936 during the horrendous tornado that swept northeast MS and parts of Georgia. There is a book out and available in the library near Tupelo that describes the tornado's destruction and the deaths and relocations that the tornado caused.  My grandma died as well.  Her name was Ercelle.
