Charles Shirley born about 1815 in Pennsylvania, appears as a free mulatto in the 1850 census of Salisbury Township in Lancaster County PA. He moved his family to West Chester Township in Chester Co PA in 1860 census (identified as 'black'). He died in 1868. His wife is listed as widowed in the 1880 census.

married Matilda [J. Book]. She was born about 1818 in PA. Daughter of John Book and Mary Baugh of Lancaster Co PA. Matilda is working as a domestic servant in East Bradford township in Chester Co in 1870. She is widowed by 1880 and lives on Franklin Street in West Chester in the 1899 town directory. She died on 12 January 1910.

"During her life in West Chester she lived at the following locations: 428 E. Gay St. (as of 1880), 343 S. Adams St. (as of 1889), 121 (South?) Matlack St. (as of 1900), and 113 S. Poplar St. (from sometime after 1900 until her death in 1910; she was living in the household of her daughter Rebecca Durnell)"

1(i). John L. Shirley born about 1841 in PA; He is employed to work on a dam in 1870; In 1900, he is widowed and living with his brother Hiram and mother Matilda. He died 28 Apr 1905 of heart trouble in West Chester, age 65

married Mary J. _______ She is shown as spouse in the 1870 census, age 24; She died 6 April 1895 due to heart failure, age 52.

1(ii). Rebecca Shirley born about 1842 in PA

"Prior to her marriage to William Andrew Durnell, Rebecca Shirley was first married to Nelson Prigg. They married between 1860 and 1864.Together they had four children: John Prigg, Nathan Prigg, Sarah Prigg and Laura Prigg."

1(iii). Mary E. Shirley born about 1845 in PA

1(iv). Caroline Shirley born about 1849 in PA

1(v). James M Shirley born about 1856 in PA; He is living with his widowed mother in 1880 census, laborer age 27. He died 6 June 1910 in West Chester Co PA

married Anna Maria [Loudin]

"James Shirley's wife was Anna Maria Loudin (sp.), born abt. 1846 in Marshalton, PA. She was the daughter of George Loudin and (Unknown) Dutton. She died March 31, 1916. Anna Maria was either married to or had children by a Jones Wilson prior to her marriage to James Shirley. The two children from this union were John Lindsay/Linsey Wilson and Johanna/Joanna Wilson."

2(v). Martha Shirley b Sep 1885 in PA; She died at West Chester PA Dec 31 1901, age 16 of consumption

1(vi). Charles H.Shirley born about 1861 in PA; possible son. He is living in West Chester PA in 1880 census, age 19 working as a waiter (note: Hiram Shirley is listed separately in this census). In 1899, Charles H. Shirley is listed as a barber living with his mother at 119 S. Franklin Street in West Chester (unless Charles H. Shirley is Hiram in 1899)

1(vi). Hiram Shirley born about 1863 in PA; He is living with his mother in 1870 census, age 4; He is listed as 'son' in the household of his mother Matilda J. Shirley in 1880 census. He worked as a waiter in a hotel at the time, age 17.

1. Charles and Matilda Shirley moved to Chester County (West Chester??) in 1859.
2. Charles Shirley died in 1868.
3. Matilda's maiden name was Matilda J. Book. During her life in West Chester she lived at the following locations: 428 E. Gay St. (as of 1880), 343
S. Adams St. (as of 1889), 121 (South?) Matlack St. (as of 1900), and 113 S. Poplar St. (from sometime after 1900 until her death in 1910; she was
living in the household of her daughter Rebecca Durnell)
4. Matilda died January 12, 1910.
5. Matilda's parents were John Book and Mary Baugh Book, both of Lancaster County, PA.
6. Mary J. Shirley (to date I have not found her maiden name) was buried in the Pennsbury-Pocopson African Union Cemetery in Pocopson, PA.
7. Prior to her marriage to William Andrew Durnell, Rebecca Shirley was first married to Nelson Prigg. They married between 1860 and 1864.Together
they had four children: John Prigg, Nathan Prigg, Sarah Prigg and Laura Prigg. (I have additional information about this branch of the family if
desired.)
8. James Shirley died June 6, 1910 in West Chester, PA.
9. James Shirley's wife was Anna Maria Loudin (sp.), born abt. 1846 in Marshalton, PA. She was the daughter of George Loudin and (Unknown)
Dutton. She died March 31, 1916. Anna Maria was either married to or had children by a Jones Wilson prior to her marriage to James Shirley. The
two children from this union were John Lindsay/Linsey Wilson and Johanna/Joanna Wilson.
10. Lindsay/Linsey Wilson never married, and died February 24, 1912.
11. Johanna/Joanna Wilson never married, but had three sons: Earl Wilson (born May 29, 1897 and died June 1969), Carl Wilson (born July 23, 1913
and died July 29, 1915), and Joseph Wilson (born May 17, 1917 and died December 12, 1917).
