2(iv). Phares Shirley born 20 June 1765 Boston MA. He was enumerated in Cortland Co NY in 1840 census; He died 20 May 1848 in Homer Cortland Co New York and is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery. His occupation was cabinet maker.

Phares was 11 years old [sic, should be 8?] when his father, Ferrers, died. His mother, now a widow for a second time, had three children: Benjamin Soper Marshall, and Mary Soper Marshall and Phares Shirley. She then married Henry Snow, a cabinet maker from Boston, and he died in two years. Phares was then 13. His mother married a fourth time to Luke Howell. She died in 1783 when Phares was 18. According to the will of Henry Snow, his stepfather, Phares (Farris) was living in Merrimac in 1778.

LW&T of Henry Snow, cabinet maker of Temple St Boston, dated Aug. 28, 1778; proved Oct. 30, 1778 (The last date may be ?wrong); recorded, Sufolk Prob.77 : 131 ; gives to his "beloved and dutiful wife Elizabeth" the sole use and improvement of all his estate, both real and personal, during her natural life, except so much of the same as it may be necessary to sell for the payment of his just debts, funeral charges, &c. After her decease, one third of his real estate, should any be left, shall go to his friend, Mr. Thomas Phillips of Salem, mariner ; one third part to Farris Shirley, an infant, about thirteen years of age, now living at Merrimack, N. H. ; and the other third part to Mary Soaper Marshall. He constitutes Nathaniel Coverly of Boston, printer, and wife Elizabeth, executors.

23 Mar 1883 Courtland Democrat - Probably Fatal Accident in Homer. While Mr. William SHIRLEY of Homer was working on the roof of Mr. A. GILKERSON's new foundry in that place Wednesday afternoon, he fell to the ground and sustained injuries which his physicians fear will prove fatal. He struck his head, fracturing the skull at the base of the brain and injuring the spine. He has been insensible from the time of the accident to the hour of our going to press. Mr. SHIRLEY is a brother of Henry F. SHIRLEY of this place and for some years past has been constable and Deputy Sheriff. He is a worthy citizen and a very efficient officer.
