the late Lewis Shirley, who was an inhabitant of this county
at the time of his death, departed this life on the 11th day
of July 1867 leaving a will...Your petitioner further states
that she is the widow of the said deceased....and that the next
of kin of said decedent are his three children and eight grandchildren
viz; Matilda C Humphries a widowed daughter of said decedent
of full age residing in this county, Lewis H Shirley a son of
said decedent of full age and Sarah Ann Shirley a daughter of
said decedent between 14 and 21 years of age both of whom reside
out of state of Alabama the exact place of their residence not
known to your petitioner, and his grandchildren are Polly and
Nathan F., Sarah and Lewis Shirley children of Wm Shirley deceased
who was a son of said decedent - all of whom reside with their
mother Elizabeth Shirley in this county. The said Polley and
Nathan F. between 14 and 21 years of age and the said Sarah and
Lewis under 14 years of age; and Jane, Catherine, Lewis and Caroline
Shirley children of Franklin Shirley deceased who was a son of
said decedent - all of whom are minors under 14 years of age
and said Lewis and Caroline reside with their mother Mary Shirley
in St Clair County Ala and Jane and Catherine reside with your

"Private Aaron Franklin Shirley was born in Alabama
in 1834. He followed his father Lewis Shirley in farming near
Ashville in St. Clair County, Alabama. He married Mary Bearden
on 29 December 1854 and had established a family with four young
children by the time he enlisted in the 19th Alabama Infantry
Regiment on 15 August 1861. Aaron Franklin enlisted in Company
F with his two younger brothers, Lewis Hensen Shirley and Benjamin
W. Shirley. Aaron died on 25 August 1862 at Lauderdale Station,
Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Family tradition has it that
he died of measles rather than of battle wounds." findagrave.com

He is buried Antioch Cemetery, Oneonta, Blount Co. Alabama
Lewis Benjamin Franklin Shirley, aged eighty-one years,
was found dead in a ditch in the L&N "Y" near his
home in Oneonta about nine o'clock Christmas morning. It is believed
that he suffered a heart attack and fell off the railroad track
on his way home Christmas Eve night. Although his son, John Shirley
and family, lived in the house with him they were unaware of
the fact that he did not come in Thursday night. Mr. Shirley
moved from Straight Mountain to Oneonta a number of years ago
and went into the mercantile business. He continued in the business
until he retired a few years ago. He was a good merchant and
a good man and leaves many friends who will regret to learn of
his sudden death. Survivors include four sons, John of Oneonta,
T.G. of Route 2, Springville, W.F. of Route 2, Oneonta and Pliney
of Acmar; 1 daughter, Mrs. Homer Wells of Birmingham; and one
half-brother, Rev. Henry Bellew of Straight Mountain. Funeral
services were held at Antioch Saturday afternoon by Rev. Dykes,
Fendley and Penland, with Robinette directing. [Southern Democrat,
