He obtained land in Athens Co OH in 1839. Enumerated in Athens

Troy, Athens Co. Ohio. He was a farmer and then later a manufacturer
of cigars. Methodist.
George P. Shirley, of Dexter City, a manufacturer of cigars
and dealer in smokers’ supplies, was born in Washington
county, on June 12, 1857, and is a son of Joseph and Lurana (Totman)
Shirley, both natives of the same county. The father was a blacksmith,
who removed to Athens county,many years ago, where both parents
died. There was a family of four sons and four daughters, all
of whom are living, and they are: Inin, Celista, John, George,
Luvema, Joseph, Emma, and Viola. Mr. Shirley was educated in
Washington county, and spent his early years in farming. About
1887, he began an apprenticeship in the cigar maker’s trade
in Athens, and remained there about four years. He worked in
various places in West Virginia and Ohio, and in 1001 started
in business in Dexter City, being the only manufacturer in the
town. He has been eminently successful in this line of work,
making a specialty of the Dexter Stogie. Mr. Shirley was married
on December 23, 1880, to Rina Sedwick, a native of Athens county,
and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Sedwick, old residents
of Athens. To them have been born a family of eight children,
seven of whom are living, as follows : Maude, Mabel, Heber, Minnie,
Sylvia, Herman and Florence. Mr. and Mrs. Shirley are members
of the Methodist church. In polities Mr. Shirley is a Republican,
though he has never sought office. He is a member of Jewel Lodge
X o. 720 Knights of Pythias, and an officer of that lodge. Mr.
Shirley is a man of sterling integrity and uprightness of character.
He is industrious and enterprising, and his careful, frugal habits,
combined with hard work, and careful management, bid fair to
place him in affluent circumstances. - A History of Noble County,

EMAIL: March 2013 RE: Pziltha. I believe that her first
name may be misspelled, and that her correct name is “Izeltha
Viola Shirley”. My Grandmother, Bessie Izeltha Hoisington
(1917-2009) was the granddaughter of Harvey E Hoisington. Harvey
was the son of William Hardesty Hoisington and Izeltha Viola
Shirley – the same person that is listed as Pziltha Viola
Shirley. I assume that Harvey knew how his mother’s name
was pronounced, and likely how she spelled it. I also assume
that my Grandmother was named for her paternal grandmother, given
the very uncommon first name that occurs nowhere else in the
family line from what I have determined thus far. Pziltha or
Izeltha Shirley went by her middle name Viola. At least, that
is how her name is listed on all of the children’s birth
records that I can find, including my GGrandfather Harvey’s.
By the way, my Grandmother went by “Izzie” throughout
her life, and while she never legally changed it, used Izeltha
B. Kiechle (nee Hoisington) as her name, just as it seemed that
her grandmother did with Viola. She also was a childhood friend
of Norma Egstrom, who is more widely known as Peggy Lee. - Dan

Lowell Shirley, married Beatrice Lorraine Willmon, from Muskogee
OK, on 5 Sept 1947, in Crawford County Arkansas. My grandmother
was actually born in 1932, although the license says 1929. She
was very young when they married, so they lied about her age
and birth year. I also have information about his service in
the army in WWII. My grandfather was a roofer in Wichita KS.
They had two sons, Bobby Everett and Ronald. I don’t know
anything about my grandfather’s family earlier than his
marriage to my grandmother. He always said his family was originally
from Ireland and that Belle Starr was a distant relative. He
also claimed Cherokee blood, but I don’t know from where.
He was quite a character and enjoyed telling grand stories....I
vaguely remember meeting who I always remembered as my grandfather’s
brother. I’m nearly positive his name was Grady and that
he appeared to be Native American, as well as claiming to be
so. He taught me, as a very young child, what he said was a rain
dance. ?? I think I remember my grandparents referring to my
“Aunt Polly” who could certainly be Paulene.... I finally
remembered referring to her [Dessie Barr Shirley], the few times
I got to meet her as a young child, as Grandma Wallace.
