Richard Shirley
was probably born in Virginia in the 1740's. He was taxed for 3 horses in the Scott County tax list of 1795. He and his wife Dorcas were listed as members in the Great Crossing Church in the 1790s. Enumerated in the Scott Co KY tax list once again in 1796. He died in 1796 Scott Co. KY. Administration of his estate was granted to Thomas Shirley on 26 July 1796. His estate made a payment to the local Constable for convening a jury into the nature of his death - thus suggesting his death was premature or may not have been due to natural causes.

Family traditional story says Richard was the son of Richard Shirley and wife, Margaret, who were dismissed from the Broad Run Baptist church June 12, 1774 in Fauquier Co. VA to go to Culpeper Co. VA. On Jan 22, 1785 they were among the charter members of the Old Turkey Creek Baptist church in Abbeville Co. South Carolina. Another traditional story says Richard was the brother of John Shirley branch #2, who married Eliz. Barmore.
