Reference: Rostcr of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 by Lillian Henderson, Volume 4, contains the following notation: Co "C" 43d Regt. Ga. Vol. Inf, Army of Tennessee, CSA, Pickens Co., GA. Pickens Volunteers: Nathaniel Shirley--Private, March 1, 1862. Deserted near Dalton, GA. November 28, 1863. (Need to document if this was OUR Nathaniel.)

Contained in my private collection (Yvonne Sutherlin) arc copies of the court records of Nathaniel's divorce from his wife, Harriet, before his marriage to Henrietta Tynes. Other documents are also included. All are listed herein.

1. State of Georgia, Warren County, Last Will and Testament of William Shurley, will dated 19 October 1841, page II 8. Will lists children, -their spouses, his wife, other info. Will recorded May 3, 1841. Inventory ( pages 395-397) of estate also in this document taken 16 May, 1841, date of William Shurley's death. Inventory included livestock, household effects, farming implements, crops stored (corn, wheat, fodder ) furniture, 5 pounds of feathers, and other items. Total value of items listed on inventory is $1174.41. (Haven't been able to place this William Shurley yet, but he should fit in somewhere. More later. ys)

2. Documents: State of Georgia, Jones County, dated 3 March 1834. Bond set for $ 1 000 for John G. Brown, appointed guardian of Nathaniel Shurley, orphan of Richard Shirley. (Richard is our Nathaniel's father. ys.)

3. Alabama Records, Sumter County, page 46, indicate Nathaniel Shurley, bondsman, swore that Sara 0. (A?) Jones, bride of Reuben Parker Vail that she was over 18. Document dated June 12, 1846.

4. Alabama Records, Sumter County, page 70, indicate Will (dated 6 January 1857, probated 4 December 1865, of Pleasant White (his mark, signature listed a daughter, America Shurley. In the probate of the will, it is stated that the petitioners, Thomas Shurley and America Shurley were defendants. (This Thomas is Nathaniel's brother. ys)

6. 1860 Census of Pike County, Mississippi (taken July 3, 1860) indicates that N. Shurly (Shurly was spelled in this manner on census) was age 41, a planter, real estate value was $2,000, personal property, $5000. Also, indicated he was born in Georgia abt 1819. Also listed is an initial (could be a H, W, or M) female age 28 years old born about 1832 in Georgia. This is probably Harriett, his second wife, who Nathaniel filed for divorce from, charging abandonment , from in Livingston, Alabama, 10th. November 1856, but then proceedings were dismissed by Nathaniel. May 14, 1857. (I have copies of all of the Court affidavits, motions, et at. Nathaniel's brother Thomas said in his answer to the interrogatories in this case that he knew that Nathaniel and Harriett has lived together as man and wife for some 9 or 10 years but that he knew only by rumor that they were married. Quite juicy! Another witness in the divorce case, Thomas R. Crews, states that he did not know whether or not they were marricd but they passed as man and wife. He also said that he was not disposed to believe that he (Nathaniel) would make an unkind husband. ys) Another female, initial M, age 8, born in Georgia. abt 1852. Appears to be a daughter of Harriett and Nathaniel. (Lillian Shirley Webb Weathersby's letter of May 15, 1975, to her brother, Homer, wherein she writes that "her grandmother Shurley (which would have been Henrietta Tynes Shurley, Nathaniel's third wife) told her that her husband, Nathaniel Shurley, lived in Alabama. He and his brother Tom Shurley had a big store in Alabama and one of them killed a man, and they left Alabama. They changed their names to Shurley, their name was originally "Shirley."

7. Lincoln County, Mississippi, 1880 Census, taken 13 July, 1880, family number 246 by T.R. Willoughby, indicates: N. Shurley, age 61, farmer, could read and write, born in Georgia, both of his parents born in South Carolina. (Note the contrary information on birthplace of his parents. Check more. ys) Henrietta, age 35, wife, occupation - keeping house, could read and write, born in Mississippi, both of her parents born in Mississippi; Hettie, age 17, daughter, keeping house, attended school this year, Could read and write, indicated she was born in Mississippi, her father born in Georgia, and her mother born in Alabama. (Evidently, Henrietta was not her mother but was Nathaniel's daughter by another wife, believed to have been Harriett Jones (more later on this). ys] Florence, age 16, daughter, keeping house, attended school this year, could read and write, indicates she was born in Mississippi, father - in Georgia, mother - Mississippi; Addie, daughter, age 14, keeping house, attended school this year, could reid and write, same birthplaces as Florence; Thomas, son, age 12, born Mississippi; Homer, son, age I 1, born Mississippi; James, son, age 7, born in Mississippi, ( this is James Linfield, our grandfather. ys;) Edward, son, age 4; and William, son, age 2. Also listed is Carrol Urban, age 18, black, male, listed as a servant and a laborer, and as being born in Mississippi.

Also, same dwelling lived James W. Hall, male, age 17, a clerk, born in Alabama, and John Porter, male, age 14, born in Georgia. ( Need to research newspapers in Gaston 1857-1859 for into on a man that Nathaniel might have killed. ys) The 1850 Census of Hinds County, Mississippi, Microcopy M-432, Roll #372, Family #1446 lists James L. Shurley, male, age 25, born in Vermont, occupation attorney; and, Harriet Shurlcy, female 24, born in Alabama. (NOTE: James W. Hall, is probably the son of Nathaniel's oldest sister, Florence Lillian Shurley who was married to a James Hall. Haven't figures out who the Porter boy would have been. ys)

9. Abstracts of Pension Records for veterans of the War of 1812 found in the 'Source Records from Pike County, Mississippi 1798-1910 have this entry: February 6, 1887 one N.
