FOR ASSESSOR Robert M. Shirley Well Worthy of the Honors of His Party. In their candidate for county assessor, the Republicans have a young man who is personally worthy of the nomination and who also will prove to be a most competent official by reason of his natural inclinations, he delighting in careful, painstaking work which the office requires and he also always being moved by a high sense of honor. Robert M. Shirley was born on a farm west of Belleville Oct. 16, 1868. His boyhood was like that of the average youth, farm work and school alternating with the seasons. He suffered the loss of a good mother at the age of six and was compelled to struggle on without her good counsel. In due time he completed the common schools at Cartersburg and in the fall of 1889, he began teaching in Guilford township. With the exception of two winters he taught continuously in the schools of the county until the present winter, supplementing his education by attending the Central Normal College. His services in his profession were always in demand as he entered enthusiastically upon his work. Some years ago his wife died, leaving two little boys and to these boys, Mr. Shirley has devoted his life, caring for them with a devotion that has won the sympathetic praise of countless people. As a citizen, as a Republican, Mr. Shirley's life is above reproach and he richly deserves to be a leader on the county ticket next Tuesday. The Republican (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, November 3, 1910--page 1, column 6:

3(iii). John A. Shirley born 1835 IN; Lived Hendricks Co Indiana

One of the most prosperous business men of Danville, Indiana, is Edgar W. Shirley, the son of John M. and Susan (Hale) Shirley, who was born February lo, 1860, in Pittsboro, in this county. His father was also a native of Hendricks county, his birth having occurred three miles southwest of Brownsburg on June 15, 1835. His mother was born about one and one-half miles southwest of Pittsboro. James W. Shirley, the grandfather of Edgar W., was born in 1803, in Kentucky, and came to Hendricks county, Indiana, in 1830, or before, settling on Big creek, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1893. James W. Shirley married Deborah Pressley, and they reared a family of eight children, the father of Edgar W. being the third in order of birth. John Shirley spent his whole life in the county of his birth. In October, 1852, he removed to Pittsboro, where he lived until 1873, being engaged in the mercantile business in that place. He continued in this business until July 29, 1873, at which time he came to Danville and took charge of the mercantile establishment which he had bought some years before in that place. He continued in active business until his death, which occurred October 14, 1913, and was one of the wealthiest and most successful business men who have ever lived in this county. He was married January 11, 1857, to Susan Hale, and to this union there were born two children, William J., who died in 1899, and Edgar W., the immediate subject of this sketch. John Shirley was a member of the Christian church and for many years was a trustee of that denomination. He was trustee of Middle township for several terms and was postmaster of Pittsboro for a number of years. After moving to Danville he held the office of trustee of Center township for two terms. He was a large landowner in Hendricks county, and one of its most solid and substantial citizens at the time of his death. - History of Hendricks County Indiana

4(ii). Edgar W. Shirley

Edgar W. Shirley was educated in the public schools of Pittsboro, concluded the common school courses in that town, and attended Butler University, Indianapolis. Immediately after the termination of his college course, he entered the store of his father in Danville, and has remained there continuously since that time. Upon his father's death in 1913, he succeeded him in the business firm of Shirley & Showalter. This firm has by its courteous treatment of its customers and strict integrity in all their business dealings, not only gained the confidence of the people, but have built up a large and profitable business, being numbered among the enterprising and progressive business houses of this city. Mr. Shirley was married in 1908 to Bernice (Burk) Kendall, of Danville. Industry and probity have been the chief factors of Mr. Shirley's steady advance in business affairs and his position in the world is such as to reflect high credit upon himself and to add to the reputation of Danville as an important business center. In addition to his interests in the mercantile business, Mr. Shirley has large real estate holdings in the county. Fraternally, he is a member of the order of Free and Accepted Masons, having taken all the degrees, including the thirty-second. In his politics, he has been affiliated with the Republican party, although he has never held any office. At the same time he takes an active interest in the political issues of the day. He helps all public enterprises and when the new Christian church was started in Danville he donated three thousand five hundred dollars to its erection. By the exercise of sound business principles and by being energetic at all times Mr. Shirley has forged to the front and is today one of the most deserving business men of the county, where he is held in high esteem by all classes because of his honesty of purpose, his industry, courteous manner and public spirit. - History of Hendricks County Indiana

3(v). Francis Marion Shirley born June 21, 1842, He died 1915; buried at Crown Hill Cem in Indianapolis, Marion Co IN

A Portrait and Biographical Record of Hendricks County (Chicago: A.W. Bowen & Co., 1895)--page 1067 - Francis M. Shirley, farmer and merchant, of Lincoln Township, Hendricks County, Ind., was born June 21, 1842, on the homestead on which he still resides, and is a son of James and Deborah (Presley) Shirley. The father was born in Bourbon County, Ky., was among the first settlers of Lincoln Township, Hendricks County, and is now making his residence with his son, the subject of this sketch. To Mr. and Mrs. James Shirley were born eight children, six of whom were reared to maturity and were named Robert, Rebecca, John, Louisa, Francis M. and George G.; the remaining two died in infancy. Francis M. Shirley received a very fair education in the local public school, and in 1860 he and his brother, George W., engaged in the mercantile business at Lizton, which they conducted together with profit for six years, when Francis M. returned to farming, and has since resided on his neat place of 120 acres. He is connected, however, with his father in the hardware business at Brownsburg, under the firm name of Shirley & Son, and this house is now doing a prosperous trade. In politics Mr. Shirley is a Democrat, and in religion he is Methodist, belonging to the M.E. congregation of Brownsburg. He is happily united in wedlock with Emily, daughter of Lawrence Leak, of Hendricks County, and to this union have been born the following children: Allie E., Ottie, Beelie E., Walter (deceased), Clarence and Luther N.

Indiana Magazine of History, "The Plague of New Elizabeth" - ".... George Shirley was a storekeeper and former trustee of Union Township. He naturally was one of the town's more prosperous citizens, and if New Elizabeth had had a social register, his eighteen year old wife, the former Mollie Wilkinson, who was reared between Danville and New Elizabeth, surely would have been listed near the top. George and Mollie were married Feb 5 1873. Being Baptists she and her husband had a good excuse to leave New Elizabeth to attend the Baptist Association's Sunday meeting at Abner's Creek a short distance north of Danville. They went to Danville on Saturday, Sept 6th and stayed at the fine home of George's brother, John Shirley. The ride out to Abner's Creek and back on Sunday was a happy one. New Elizabeth had become a dreary place to live. The Shirleys stayed Sunday night in Danville where the young woman became ill. Danville's best physicians, including Dr. W.J. Hoadley, who was George and John Shirley's brother-in-law, and Dr. Lockhart, watched her until she died early Monday afternoon. According to the doctors, Mrs. Shirley had a "pretty fair case of cholera," she had brought from New Elizabeth. While the physicians could do nothing for her, they undoubtedly did all they could to make certain that cholera did not spread to other members of the family or to Danville residents. Mollie Shirley was buried in the graveyard at Abner's Creek--probably at night. She and Dr. Dicks were the only victims of New Elizabeth's epidemic not laid to rest in Vieleys's cemetery.

Samuel served in the Union forces of the Civil War and was discharged from the Army on May 15,1865. While fighting, he contracted measles and other afflictions. Samuel had respiratory problems as a result of his Civil War experiences and his difficulty in breathing at night forced him to sleep outside year-around while his family slept in a rented house during the winters. The need for the rented house is what kept them in one place during the winter. It's been said they wandered far an wide during the summer going north to Iowa. The wagon was always Samuel's bedroom. While living in Mercer County, Samuel wintered in Warsaw MO. It was here his eldest son, William Riley, clerked in a store for several years during their periodic stays in order to earn money to keep the family in food. William also won several purses in local boxing and wrestling matches. A grandchild of William's, Truman Swingle, who lives in Kirksville MO was a Golden Gloves competitor before he entered WWII.
