Hello Betty,

I'm presently researching my family name (Steinburg)  I've found that my 3grt grandmothers names was Mary Polly Shirley. I have pasted the information that was sent to me below.  She married Thomas Steinburgh.  I'm stuck here.  I know their first child was born 1811 in Osnabruck twnp Stormont county. So I assume they were married around 1809. On the 1851 census in Matilda twnsp Ontario. They are recorded as Americans and Baptists.  I was wondering if you could enlighten me about them

The Shirley`s came from Ware, Mass. They were on their way to Canada when someone told them they were foolish to go to a wilderness and they bought a farm about a mile from Louisville, near where Massena Springs are in New York State. They lived there for awhile and Grandma`s mother (Jane Shirley) died there.  Mother thinks Thomas Shirley had the home place. One of Grandma Shirley`s sisters, Polly Shirley (Mary), was married to Thos. Steinburgh who lived on Steacy Island in the St. Lawrence River until there was trouble between great Britain & United States (about 1812). They got afraid and left the place and all improvements & went back on a new farm on the 6th or 4th concession of Township of Matilda, Dundas County, Ontario, & some of their descendants still live there. Aunt Polly died at Bearbrooke, Russell County Ont. (near Leanard, Ont. & about 20 miles from Ottawa) and was buried there. I think at the time of her death she was living with her son Thomas Steinburgh who had a farm at Lenard and died there.  Thos. Steinburgh, husband of Polly, died in Matilda & was buried there. In his earlier years he had been a river pilot - lumber.

Her grave is located outside of Vars on Force Road.  Her birth date appears to be 1785.

This was a portion of a note concerning the Murray family and I copied it for you exactly as written. Hope it is some interest.
