This info on the brothers in the CW was from Marshland to Heartland Vol 15, No. 4, 1991, pg 93. This is a publication of the Ottawa Co. Gen. Society.

Here are some thoughts of my own. All the info says Abiathur and wife came with the Ramsdell Family and names the Ramsdell sons. No mention of any children of Abiathur's til we hear of Sarah being born in 1812 and "the first white child to be born in that area." Then, many people believe that A's son John was John Carmichael and was born in Ottawa County in 1810 or 1811. Wouldn't that make HIM the first child born there? On the 1850 Census, Deborah Sherley said she was b in MA in 1808. There is speculation that she was the daughter of a John Carmichael Sherley who fought in the RW. Carmi Sherley may have been his son rather than A's because he said he was b in NY and supposedly, the Sherleys went from MA to NY and then on to OH.

Well, we can see that in that Deborah was b 1808 in MA, Carmi b 1811 in NY and Sophia Sherley b 1816, probably in OH. So what it looks like to me is that John Carmichael of MA and RW fame may have been the brother of Abiathur and took his family to NY before going to OH. The family has been trying to link Deborah and Sophia to someone for years.

Deborah was said to have a cousin John Sherley in Huron Co. This would be A's son.

Both Carmi Sherley and Deborah Sherley named a son Carmi Sherley, except that Deborah's son d at 3 yrs from TB. But I can see them naming their sons for their father.

After Carmi Sherley died in the cholera epidemic. Deborah and husband Sumner Knapp took in Carmi's daughter Lucy Ann, their niece. This makes perfect sense to me, but may still be totally wrong. But I can see Deb naming her son for her father and brother, and Carmi continuing the family name with his own son Carmi. All good speculation and I have no real proof yet who the parents of Deb, Sophia and Carmi were. Hope someone will sometime!

Let me know if you can add something, or point out a glaring error that I may have missed, holes in my thinking, whatever. I'm open to everything thing. :o)

Take care,
