FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral mass for Sam D. Shirley, 91, will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament. Father Gilbert Schneider, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in a private family cemetery in Deer Springs. A rosary will be recited this evening at 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament. Shirley died Feb. 23 in Fort Defiance. He was born Oct. 5, 1913 in Deer Springs into the Honeycombed Rock People Clan for the One Who Walks Around People Clan. Shirley was a rancher. He served in WWII as a sergeant in the 158 Infantry Bushmasters regiment in the Asiain Pacific Theater including Guadalcanal, Panama Canal, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a Purple Heart recipient. Shirley retired from the BIA in 1968 following 30 years of employment as a surveyor with the roads department. Survivors include his daughters, Kathy Collins of Fort Defiance, Velma Shirley of Window Rock; sister, Ann Shirley of Ganado; brothers, Bernard Shirley of Dallas, Texas, Walter Shurley of Winslow; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Shirley; father, Nat Begay; mother, Mary Shirley-Begay; son, Sam Shirley, Jr.; brothers, Harry Shirley, John Shirley, Phillip Shirley and sister, Annie Dodge Wauneka. Visitation will be 9 a.m., one hour prior to services, at St. Michaels Mission. A rosary will be recited 5:30 p.m., Sunday, April 19, at St. Michael Mission. Shirley died April 16, 2009, in Gallup. She was born Feb. 27, 1915, in Deer Springs, into the Honey Comb People Clan for the One Who Walks Around People Clan. Shirley went to school up to the 11th grade. She worked as a Home living assistant for over 30 years and retired in 1989 from Wide Ruins Boarding School. Shirley was a rug weaver, girl scout leader, who went camping with the scouts. She loved being with her family and friends and loved her sheep. Survivors include her son, Norman Wauneka of Gallup; brother, Bernard Shirley of Dallas, Texas; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by Ned Begay, Mary Begay Shirley; sister, Annie Dodge Wauneka; brothers, Sam Shirley, Johnny Shirley, Phillip Shirley, Harry Shirley, Walter Shirley. Pallbearers will be Edmund Cohoe Jr., Edwin Cohoe, Ernest Shirley, Doug Lowery, John Gorman, Edison Shirley. DEER SPRINGS — Services for Annie Tracey Shirley, 87, will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Navajo Bible Church, Fort Defiance. Pastor R. Dean Baker will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot, Red Willow Springs, Ariz. Shirley died March 4, 2008, in Albuquerque. She was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Fluted Rock, into the Sleeping Rock People Clan for the Red Streak People Clan. Shirley was self-taught Navajo traditional woman. She was self employed as a rug weaver, seamstress and rancher. Shirley healed family and livestock with natural herbs and would get involved with assisting the community. In the early 1950s she won first prize on her natural dyes as Navajo rug weaver during the tribal fair. She was recognized for her famous rug weaving which was in a private collection. She loved to cook, herd sheep, tell Navajo stories and sing Navajo songs. Survivors include her sons, Edward Shirley of Klagetoh, Lewis Shirley, Leroy Shirley, both of Deer Springs; daughters, Pauline Holmes of Window Rock, Ella S. Dalton of Fort Defiance, Linda Wilson of Albuquerque; sisters, Maggie T. Begay of Fort Defiance, Mildred Hubbard of Nazlini; 37 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Justin Shirley; sons, Henry Shirley, Edison Shirley; parents, Sam and Ya Cos Bah Tracey. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. He is of the Todich'iini clan, born for the Tabaahi clan. His maternal grandfather is Tse'naaginii and his paternal grandfather is Tsenjiikini. Shirley, raised by his grandmother since he was a toddler has called Chinle his home all of his life. He has genuine love for people from all walks of life. He enjoys playing basketball, running and spending time with his family. One of his greatest enjoyments is lecturing on the Navajo way of life for self-development. He is married to Vikkie and they have six children, three daughters and three sons. His wife Vikki is Kiyaa'nni born for the Ma'iidesh giizhnii clan. Her parents are Victor Moses and Gladys Begay of Lukachukai, Arizona.A 1966 graduate of Chinle High School in Chinle, Arizona, Shirley went on to earn his Associates of Art Degree in 1968 from Magic Valley Christian College in Albion, Idaho. His continued pursuit of education found him at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in Business. In 1978, Shirley earned a Master of Social Work Degree from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.

He was born February 21, 1929 in Kinlichee, Ariz. into the Coyote Pass Clan for the Bitterwater Clan. Survivors include his wife, Marie Shirley; sons, Kelvin Shirley of Breadsprings and Ervin Shirley of Gallup; daughters, Lorraine Teller of Gallup, LaVerne Jones of Gallup, Darlene Shirley of Burnside, Ariz., Judy Willetto of Gallup, Lenora Shirley of Klagetoh, and Veronica Miller of Iyanbito; brother, Peter Shirley; sisters, Isabelle, Hazel, and Angela; 30 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. FORT DEFIANCE — Funeral mass for Sam D. Shirley, 91, will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament. Father Gilbert Schneider, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in a private family cemetery in Deer Springs.

A rosary will be recited this evening at 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament.

Shirley died Feb. 23 in Fort Defiance. He was born Oct. 5, 1913 in Deer Springs into the Honeycombed Rock People Clan for the One Who Walks Around People Clan.

Shirley was a rancher. He served in WWII as a sergeant in the 158 Infantry Bushmasters regiment in the Asiain Pacific Theater including Guadalcanal, Panama Canal, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a Purple Heart recipient. Shirley retired from the BIA in 1968 following 30 years of employment as a surveyor with the roads department.

Survivors include his daughters, Kathy Collins of Fort Defiance, Velma Shirley of Window Rock; sister, Ann Shirley of Ganado; brothers, Bernard Shirley of Dallas, Texas, Walter Shurley of Winslow; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Shirley; father, Nat Begay; mother, Mary Shirley-Begay; son, Sam Shirley, Jr.; brothers, Harry Shirley, John Shirley, Phillip Shirley and sister, Annie Dodge Wauneka.

Pallbearers will be Gabriel Collins, Joseph Collins, Sonny Collins, William Collins III, Corey Manuelito, Josh Manuelito, and Travis Manuelito.

Shirley died April 16, 2009, in Gallup. She was born Feb. 27, 1915, in Deer Springs, into the Honey Comb People Clan for the One Who Walks Around People Clan.

Shirley went to school up to the 11th grade. She worked as a Home living assistant for over 30 years and retired in 1989 from Wide Ruins Boarding School. Shirley was a rug weaver, girl scout leader, who went camping with the scouts.

She loved being with her family and friends and loved her sheep.

Survivors include her son, Norman Wauneka of Gallup; brother, Bernard Shirley of Dallas, Texas; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by Ned Begay, Mary Begay Shirley; sister, Annie Dodge Wauneka; brothers, Sam Shirley, Johnny Shirley, Phillip Shirley, Harry Shirley, Walter Shirley.

Shirley died March 4, 2008, in Albuquerque. She was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Fluted Rock, into the Sleeping Rock People Clan for the Red Streak People Clan.

Shirley was self-taught Navajo traditional woman. She was self employed as a rug weaver, seamstress and rancher. Shirley healed family and livestock with natural herbs and would get involved with assisting the community. In the early 1950s she won first prize on her natural dyes as Navajo rug weaver during the tribal fair. She was recognized for her famous rug weaving which was in a private collection. She loved to cook, herd sheep, tell Navajo stories and sing Navajo songs.

Survivors include her sons, Edward Shirley of Klagetoh, Lewis Shirley, Leroy Shirley, both of Deer Springs; daughters, Pauline Holmes of Window Rock, Ella S. Dalton of Fort Defiance, Linda Wilson of Albuquerque; sisters, Maggie T. Begay of Fort Defiance, Mildred Hubbard of Nazlini; 37 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Justin Shirley; sons, Henry Shirley, Edison Shirley; parents, Sam and Ya Cos Bah Tracey.

Shirley went to school at Sherman Institute in Riverside Calif. She worked with ONEO and retired from the Navajo Nation Headstart. Shirley enjoyed sewing, cooking and taking care of live stock. She loved being around her grandchildren and being involved with her church activities.
Survivors include her sons Harold Shirley of Flagstaff, Ariz., Paterson Shirley of Gallup; Peter Shirley of Yakima, Wash., Peterson Shirley of Farmington; Percy Shirley of Deer Springs; and Patrick Shirley of Deer Springs; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. CHINLE — Funeral services for Timothy "Speedy" Shirley, 68, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, May 26, at Fatima Church, Chinle. Burial will be in Chinle Community Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m., at Fatima Church, Chinle.

Shirley died May 21, 2011, in Flagstaff. He was born Dec. 24, 1942, in Chinle.

Shirley graduated from Chinle High School. He worked with the Navajo Nation Waterworks for 27 years, worked with Justin Tso's Horse Rental for 25 years as a tour guide and recieved guide of the year in 1993 and was recognized in the March 1999 edition of Western Horseman. His hobbies included horses and tour guides.

Survivors include his wife, Wilhemina Begay Shirley of Chinle; sons, Derek Q. Shirley, Garrick Shirley, both of Chinle; brothers, Alfred Shirley of Chinle, Frankie Shirley of Lukachukai; sisters, Lynn Cody of Dilcon, Evonne Shirley of Chinle, Lena Shirley of Chinle, Alta Mitchell of Sun Dance, MIldred Kee of Chinle; one grandchild.

Shirley was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Yazzie, Leo Shirley; sister, Marie A. Lee; grandparents, Frank Mitchell, Rose Mitchell, John and Jennie Shirley.

Pallbearers will be Benson Kee, Augustine Sandoval, Ronald Sandoval, Sunny Cody, Floyd Baldwin, Jerry Mitchell, Hadley Tsosie.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Sunnyside #37, 6 p.m., May 23-25.

CHINLE — Funeral services for Marie A. Lee, 62, will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 27, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Chinle. The Rev. Blane O'Grien will officiate. Burial will be in Chinle Community Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m., April 27, at Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Lee was a nursing assistant and worked for the Navajo Nation with the EMT and TEC Technician. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, tending to her live stock. She received the employee of the year award for field working T.B. Tech.

Survivors include her husband, Ben C. Lee Sr.; sons, Calvin T. Begay, Victor T. Begay, Ben C. Lee Jr.; daughters, Janice T. Begay, Jancita A. Johnson, Lucinda L. Sam; brothers, Alfred Shirley, Timothy Shirley, Frankie Shirley; sisters, Lynn S. Cody, Yvonne Shirley, Lena Shirley, Alta Mitchell, Mildred Kee; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
