Hi,

Your Walter McKive Shirley Sr and wife Myrtle are listed in the 1930 PA census for Rutledge, Delaware County. It says he was born about 1893 in North Carolina and worked as an electrician. He has a younger sister named Lois Jane Shirley.

Assuming this birthplace is correct, we find a Walter M. Shirley born about 1893 in Silver Hill Township in Davidson County North Carolina in the 1900 census for that county and state. His father was James L. Shirley (b about 1852 NC) and wife Paulina. Walter's brothers were Arthur and Wiley Shirley.

This is where it gets tricky. James "L" Shirley is not showing up precisely in the earlier census. But...

In 1870 census for the same town Silver Hill, Davidson Co NC, we find a James Shirley born about 1842 (age 28) in the household of Robert Shirley and wife ?Fraby. All born NC. A brother named Robert is age 16 (so I suspect the age of 28 should be 18 instead for James?)

The 1860 census for Davidson finds this family. Oddly, The father Robert Shirley is now Henry Shirley with wife Ferabee. James "A" Shirley is in the household born about 1852.

From there, it should begin to connect to an established lineage found on the Shirley Association website, but for some reason, I'm not finding it. Oddly, I remember this Henry/Robert issue in past discussions with Betty Shirley. But I'm drawing a blank. I'll bet Betty can add something to this info.
