In Shirley's Bay, between about 1953 and 1967, we lived at the top (south end) of Hilda Street (a street there now named on the NCC maps). When we moved in, around 1953, there was a small pioneer style red log home (chinked) opposite us at the far top (south, again) end of Hilda. The residents had long moved out by the time it was taken apart, I believe around 1957. I have very vague memories of it, but always wondered if it was on of the original homes of your Shirley ancestors. I believe my father met the owners and talked with them around the demolition time, but my father is long gone so I can't ask him more.

I have a very early, detailed Map of Nepean which shows the titles for the lots in Nepean, including the Shirley's Bay area, including the names Thomas Shirley (who we understood owned the land but didn't live here), and M. Shirley and another Shirley. Do you have any family pictures of homes from that area, so I could try to identify them. I kept pictures of some of the original, more substantial homes, so maybe that's helpful to you.

My family moved to Antrim in 1860, and originally they lived in a little log home very similar to the one behind us in Shirley's Bay. That's how I know it's likely from that same period, around 1840-1870.

If you have any Shirley relatives still living around Nepean, I'd love to be in touch with them.

Email from Kristabel July 2024: I have noticed how many Cristabel’s there are ( christabelle, cristabela etc… ) including my great grandmothers sisters middle name and many of her first cousins ( and then in a direct line back, many generations )

It has been simple enough to track back great grands through the hard work of many relatives but finding side branches have proven more difficult. It wasn’t until the Shirley family association that I was able to confirm my theory that there are many many more Cristabel’s. But what I am seeking is if anyone knows why there are so many Cristabel’s. If anyone who was given the name in current history knows why this name has been so actively carried on. Who was the first Cristabel and what made her a matriarch to name your next 300+ years of daughters after.

I myself am a Krista, my mother only remembers hearing the name and liking it. In all likelihood, since there were so many Cristabel’s she heard it as a child on the lips of cousins. I always felt my name stopped abruptly and didn’t feel like it belonged. When we were gifted a family tree and saw the name repeated it felt different. It felt complete. Now I’m trying to find the story behind the name, through cousins perhaps?
