1.v Robert Sherley chr Sept 11, 1583 St. Magnus Martyr. In 1607, Robert Sherley was granted his freedom in the Goldsmith's Company 'by servitude' by his master William Terrey. He inherited his father's land and tenements at St Mary Somerset Parish, London in his 1612 will. His mother Mary Holman Sherley died in 1626 leaving a will that instructs sons John and James to give their elder brother Robert 1/3 portion of their land in Godstone Surrey purchased by the father in the names of only John and James Sherley

1637 Will - Sherley, Robert of Wainsted Essex gent - 1636 Robert Sherley of Wainsted in Essex gentleman to my daughter Mary Gunston land in parish of Saint Mary Somersett London, housed in Thames Street to my eldest son Robert Sherley, younger son Mathew Sherley who is now on a voyage at sea, manor of canf….Essex, manor of Kinfoldy in parish of Layton Essex, to daughter Sara Bentley and Mary …inilton, to son in law Armando Bentley and Thomas Gunston, tenants in Stratford Laughton Essex, land held by George Flood, to mother in law Sara Harvey, grandchild Robert Gunston, to grandchild Sara Bentley and grandchild Mary Bentley, to grandchild Mary Gunston, to Mr. Madison minster of Wainsted parish, to poor of Wainsted parish, to servant Sara Child, to John Voghey, to my brother John Sherley and James Sherley overseers.Witness by Joseph Wilses, Thomas Pynfold, Thomas Dirkins, Stephen Crofts, Proven by Robert Sherley 1637 PCC 11/175 [144 Goare]

married Sarah Harvey on 7 December 1609 at St. Olave Jewry, London, daughter of Sarah Harvey of St Olave Old Jewry Parish, London, and grandaughter of William Harvey citizen and grocer of London. She was buried 13 April 1618 at St Michael Wood Street London

[Mother-in-law] Sarah Harvey, widow, Of St, Olave's, Old Jewry, London. Will dated 27 Oct. 1638"... the tomb of my late father-in-law, Mr. William Harvey, in that church [St Michael Wood Street]. To the poor of sd St. Olave's, where I now dwell £5. To my grandchild, Matthew Shirley, son of my dau. Sarah Shirley, decd., £80 on his return from sea...To my grandchild Robert Shirley £5..."

2.i Sarah Sherley chr 21 April 1611 St. Verdast Foster Lane parish, City of London. She was named in her grandfather Robert Sherley's 1612 will. She married Armando Bentley

2.ii Robert Sherley chr 11 October 1612 at St. Verdast Foster Lane, City of London. 1628 June 9, Robert Sherley son of Robert Sherley goldsmith of London was apprenticed to John Prince for 8 years in the Goldsmith's Company. He proved his father Robert Sherley's 1637 Will. Mention in 1638 will of grandmother Harvey. Member of the Goldsmith's Company of London in 1647. Mentioned in brother Mathew's 1659 Will. Dead by 1679.

1644 Essex Session Roll - Michaelmas - Indictments of Robert Sherley of Wanstead goldsmith, 1 Nov 1643 , built a cottage there which was occupied by Robert Sherle father of the said Robert until 1 October 1644, viz., for over 11 months, without laing 4 acres of land thereto. Witness: Richard Boothby. Q/SR 322/121-122 (something wrong here)

1647 Goldsmith's Company - Richard Sharp granted freedom from servitude by his master Robert Sherley.

23 Feb 1651-2 Assignment of term of years in lease unexpired. Robert Harvey of Godmanchester Co. Hunts, gentleman administrator of Thomas Awdley late of London, dec'd and Hugh Awdley of the Inner Temple, Esquire to Robert Sherley, citizen and goldsmith. Great messuage or brick house, Thomas Awdley, citizen and mercer of London, made his will in 1641 making his brother Hugh executor but the said Hugh refused to act. Seals - 2 fragments. D.E.2314. 1662 Essex Hearth Tax - Beacontree Hundred, West Ham, Plaistow Ward: Robert Sherley - 16 hearths

1662 Will of Hugh Awdeley of Inner Temple London esq [mentions numerous Harvey relatives] To kinsman, Mr. Robert Shirley, £100, and to his wife £10 for a ring, and to their two daus. £500 each, to be paid one year after my decease

Married Hannah _________ She is possibly Hannah Bridges who administered her father estate in 1630 (Samuel Bridges, d St Savior, Southwark, goldsmith of London). Named as Hannah Sherley in the margin of the probate with her sister Anne Bridges following the failure of their mother Margery to complete the duties.

3.i Hannah Sherley- of Westham Essex, spinster age 26 married John Van Burg [Vanberg] of Westham, Essex, Merchant age 24 by license; Vicar General of Archbishop of Cantebury license Feb 19 1668/9 (both deceased by 1683)

27 Feb., 1664-5 Lease for unexpired years. William Bayly of Stepney, gentleman, Robert Sherley of London, goldsmith, Hannah his eldest daughter of 1st part to Mary Sherley 2nd daughter of said Robert 2nd part. Great messuage or Brick House built by Sir Arthur Ingram etc. and a messuage built by said Robert Sherley.- ref. ACC/0349/158

Assignment of Lease. - ref. ACC/0349/161 - date: 7 June, 1673
Great Mansion or Brickhouse etc. John Vanbergh of Plaistow, co. Essex, gentleman and Hannah his wife, eldest daughter of Robert Sherley of Plaistow, gentleman and Elicio Batailhey of London, merchant and Mary his wife 2nd daughter of said Robert Sherley to Francis Tyssen of London, merchant.

3.ii Mary Sherley- died 1702. Buried All Saints Plaistow Essex; married Elias Battilhey of France (see above info)

Copy of Act of Parliament. - ref. ACC/0349/173 - date: 1689
Elias Battilhey "an alien born within the Dominions of the French King." A month after marriage he deserted his wife. Full story of the Sherley family and of their connextion with the Carpenders set out. To enable Hannah Sherley widow and Mary Battilhey als. Sherley her daughter to settle and dispose of lands.

2.iv Mathew Sherley chr 25 June 1615 at St. Verdast, Foster Lane, City of London. He was at sea in 1636 when mentioned in his grandmother Harvey's will.

Cousin John Gunston son of Thomas Gunston, to kinswoman Eliz Gunston daughter of Thomas Gunston, brother Robert Sherley, to kinswoman Mary Laver, to dau in law Ellinore Ambrose widow, to her daughter Elizabeth Ambrose infant, Wife Elizabeth Sherley executrix.
