3(v). John Shirley, chr. May 19, 1816 Dalbury Lees Derbyshire. He was a Sergeant in Grenadier Guards, Lived at Tower of London parish in 1841 census. Lived at St Werbergh Parish Derby, Derbyshire in 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. He died 1889 in Derbyshire

4(v).  Francis John Shirley, christened 1847 Dorchester Dorset. In 1871, he was 23, unmarried, a boarder in Kensington London Middlesex, working as a clerk at the Bank of England. (A person of the same name son of Arthur Sewallis Shirley christened in Dorset same year. Coincidence?)

4(vi). John Shirley b August 11, 1849; christened 20 October 1849 at Christchurch, Fordington West Dorchester Dorset, He migrated to New South Wales, Australia and died there on April 5, 1922 at Brisbane Australia, Shirleys of New South Wales Australia

4(vii). Elizabeth Sophia Shirley, chr. Nov 7, 1855 at St Werburgh, Derby, Derbyshire; She married Sir James Edward Parrott 1891 at West Derby

Sir James Edward Parrott, MP, (1 June 1863 - 5 April 1921) was a British teacher and author, who served as the Liberal Member of Parliament from Edinburgh South for 1917-1918. He was born in Marple, Cheshire, the eldest son of a schoolteacher. He was educated at St. Paul's College, Cheltenham and then became an elementary schoolteacher, studying for a MA degree at Trinity College, Dublin at the same time. In 1891, he married Elizabeth Shirley, with whom he would have three daughters; she later became the Inspectress of Schools in Liverpool. He worked in education in Sheffield and then Liverpool for several years, during which time he began to write schoolbooks; as a result of this work, he was appointed educational editor at Thomas Nelson & Sons in 1898, and moved to Edinburgh. In 1900, he was awarded the degree of LLD by Trinity College, Dublin, ranked at the head of the examination list. He was elected chairman of the South Edinburgh Liberal Association in 1904 (until 1917), and the chair of Edinburgh United Liberal Committee in 1908 (until 1919). He was knighted in 1910 for services to the Liberal Party. He was a Governor of Cheltenham Training College, and a Justice of the Peace for the City of Edinburgh. For his work with Belgian and Serbian refugees during the First World War, he received the Belgian Order of the Crown with Palms in Gold, and was an Officer of the Serbian Order of St. Sava.

He married in 1849 in Wichnor Staffordshire, age 22; He was married and enumerated in Dalbury Lees in 1851 census; Also in the census household is William Fearn, age 6, born Bradley Derbyshire (Is he a stepson, wife's younger brother?) Phillip was a boarder at Horninglow parish, near Burton on Trent Staffordshire in 1861 census; He was a boarder in Litchurch Derbyshire in 1871 census, widowed; An innkeeper at Litchurch, Derbyshire in 1881, age 54 born Dalbury Lees, wife Lydia and daughter Ada K Shirley, age 6.

married 1) Sarah Fearn in 1849 in Wichnor, Staffordshire (Groom's father William Shirley is named). Daughter of Charles Fearn. She was the wife of Phillip Shirley in 1851 census. She died in 1858 at the birth of a child

married 2) Lydia Bates on 26 December 1872 at Saint Andrews Derby, Derbyshire, daughter of John Bates (Philip's father is named); She apparently married Woodward later and appears as Lydia Woodword in the 1891 census (see Email below)

Age 21 in 1871 census of Dalbury Lees, Derbyshire (Error alert: 1871 census may be for a Philip Shirley shown above chr 1849 at Dalbury)

Email from Fran 2024 - [Suggests that Philip was later known as William Shirley, family migrated to Australia] 18/2/1880 British Army Marriage records William married Jessie Alice Brown; 1881 Channel Islands census: living at Elizabeth Castle, St Aubin's Fort, occupation, Bombardier; 16/12/1881 British Army Baptism records, daughter Amy Florence Shirley born; 1891 England census living with step mother Lydia (now Woodward remarried 1887) and her daughter Ada Kate (age 16) along with wife Jessie and their daughters Amy Florence & Alice Maud
