20 Jun 1876 CORONER'S INQUEST. YESTERDAY
'forenoon the City Coroner hold an inquest at the Blind Beggar
Hotel, Oxford and Liverpool streets, respect- ing the cause of
death of a man named William Shirley. Susan Shirley, the wife
of deceased, residing at 380, Macquarie-street South, deposed
to his identity ; he was 41 years of age, and a native of
Kent, England ; he had been in the colony for eighteen years
: sometimes he was given to drink ; she last saw him alive between
6 and 7 on Saturday evening, coming out of Brown's hotel, corner
of William and Crown streets. Dr. Charles Kinnaird Mackellar,
residing in Liverpool- street, deposed that on Sunday evening,
at the request of the City Coroner, he made a post-mortem examination
of the body of William Shirley : there were no marks of violence
on the trunk, but blood had issued from the ears and mouth ;
an examination of the head showed a very extenive fracture of
the base of the skull, with rupture of the bran substance, and
a considerable effusion of blood into its tissue; death had resulted
from the fracture before-mentioned, the fracture had been the
result of direct violence. By jury : The injury might have been
the result either of a fall or heavy blow. Elizabeth Nicholls,
residing at 252, Liverpool-street, deposed : Deceased, whom she
knew, came to her place between 8 and 9 o clock on Saturday evening
last; he sent for a shilling's worth of brandy; he appeared to
be under the influence of drink; the brandy was drunk between
deceased and three women who were in the house ; deceased after
a time said that he felt 'boozed,' and asked to be allowed to
lie down for a sleep; she told him to do so and he lay down on
a sofa in the front room on the ground floor ; she put a pillow
under his head; he went to sleep shortly after she went out,
leaving him as she supposed asleep; he had a hearty supper after
he came to her place; she went out about 10 o'clock, leaving
Mrs. De Bello in the house putting a child to bed, as well as
a servant woman; the latter was in the kitchen; there was a light
in the front room downstairs, in which deceased was lying down,
after her return in about ten minutes, on entering the front
room, she did not see Shirley, but she saw Mrs De Bello, who
asked her whether she heard the fall, and she said not; Mrs.
De Bello turned round and said " Where is Bill gone ?"'
and witness said that he must have gone ; she took a light to
go into the backroom with the intention of getting a cup of tea,
and as she went in she heard groans from below; she said to Mrs
De Bello, " My God, Mary, what is that?" she held the
lamp over the rails and saw Shirley lying on his back with his
head in the corner against the wall, and his feet on the second
stair from the ground ; on comg downstairs she saw a pool of
blood by his head; it was coining from his left ear; she spoke
to him, but got no reply; he appeared to be unconscious ; she
sent for a neighbour named Brown, with whose assistance he was
conveyed upstairs; doctors were sent for, but they all said that
they had been up all night and could not come; he never regained
consciousness, and died between 12 and 1 o'clock on Sunday morning
; she then went and reported the circumstance at the Darlinghurst
station ; the lamp on her return was still burning in the front
room ; there was no light in the back room; she had known deceased
for the last four years ; he had often driven her in his cab;
he had often had a glass of drink with her ; she had seen him
under the influence of drink but not tipsy; a man was only drunk
in her opinion ' when he lay down to it; ' deceased had often
been up and down the basement stairs. In the early part of her
evidence this witness was very flippant and impertinent m her
answers and observations but was brought to some degree of reason
by the Coroner telling her that it was in his power to punish
her for contempt, which had she been a man instead of a woman
he should already have taken steps to do. Mary De Bello, a married
woman, but not residing with her husband, who was in Melbourne,
said she had been living at 252 Liverpool-street for the last
three months; deceased came to the place between 8 and 9 o'clock
on Saturday evening; he was apparently intoxi- cated ; he sent
out for some drink' witness got a shilling's worth of brandy
which they drank amongst them; he was allowed, in answer to a
request that he made) to lie down on a couch in the front room
downstairs after he had had some supper; after a little while
Mrs Nicholls went out, at which time witness was upstairs attending
to her little girl aged three years, who was crying ; the servant
girl was then asleep in the back room upstairs ; Mrs Nicholls
was absent for ten minutes or a quarter of an hour; witness was
standing at the front door as he came up ; there was no light
in the back room; about three minutes before she came downstairs
witness heard a noise as of something falling on the floor ;
she thought it was Shirley falling from the sofa on to the floor;
when she came downstairs, she observed that he was neither on
the sofa nor the floor; the front door had been open and she
thought he had gone out. The rest of the evidence of Mrs De Bello
is corroberative of that of the previous witness, David Brown,
a neighbour, who was called in to help the women to carry Shirley
upstairs from the base- ment and place him on a sofa, was also
examined. The jury found that death had resulted from injuries
accidentally received by falling downstairs.
