"During many years, the Independents and Baptists
residing in Rochester were mostly identified, as members, with
the churches of Christ in Chatham and Strood. But, in 1851, a
few of the members of the Independent church at Chatham, who
had ardently desired a sanctuary in their own city, were offered
a plot ground, near the Vines, Rochester, by Mr Shirley, one
of the deacons of their church. In consequence of this offer,
they invited the Rev. Dr Jenkyn to commence his ministry in that
city, under the sanction of the church at Chatham."
