1762 May 22 Great Snoring Manoral Court Roll - To this court comes Hester Falconbridge widow and the sd John Falconbridge her son [land reverted back to the Lord of the Manor] To one tenement called Bloomy with orchard in Great Snoring to use of John Shirley of Great Snoring co of Norfolk [H.. ] gardiner (gardman?), his heirs etc....which premises the sd Hester Falconbridge had 7 June 1742 (Margin notation: 9 May 1779 Mary Shirley admitted)

1778 Archdeaconry Court of Norwich - Registered Wills pg 134, Item 94 -Will of John Sherley of Great Snoring (page 2) - I John Sherley of Great Snoring co of Norfolk malster; Give unto my wife Mary Sherley all and every goods chattels cattle other personal estate; Also to my wife all my messuages lands tenements with appurtenances situate in Great Snoring during term of her natural life and after her decease I dispose of them following: I give unto my nephews Thomas Sherley the eldest son of James Sherley all messuage belonging which lately was the property of one Falconkenbridge situate in Great Snoring only paying out of it to his brother James and his heirs the sum of L5. Also my other messuage belonging lately the property of Ann Jackell situate in Great Snoring. I give unto my nephew Francis Sherley the eldest son of Francis Sherley paying out of unto John Browne the eldest son of John Browne a nephew of mine L5. Appoint my said wife Mary executrix. Dated 4 June 1772 <s> John Shirley. Wit: Richd Curle, William Wright, Elizabeth Plowright; Proven by Mary Sherley 12 October 1778

1791 March 14 Great Snoring Manoral Court - [1779 admittance of Mary Shirley to tenancy of land in Great Snoring that was her husband's - In margin note: Thomas Shirley admitted 14 Mar 1791; Later on court roll for 21 May 1788, death of Mary Shirley; See LDS pag 791, identifies Thomas Shirley as of St Martin at Oak; pg 794 death of Thomas Shirley]

married Mary ________ She was admitted to the tenancy held by her deceased husband John Shirley in 1779. Her death was noted at the Manoral court dated 21 May 1788

1779 May 10 Great Snoring Manoral Court - Dated 22 May 1762 John Shirley late a copyhold tenant of this manor did then surrender out of his hands into the hands of the Lord of the Manor...It is presented by the homage that the said John Shirley since the last court died seized of certian lands holden by copy of court roll. Now to this court comes Mary Shirley the widow of the sd John Shirley in her proper person and brings a probate of the last will and testament of the said John Shirley dated 4 June 1772 [all tenements to wife Mary Shirley during her natural life]. To one tenement called Blooms with an orchard in Great Snoring which premises the sd John Shirley took up on the surrender of Hester Falconbridge widow and John Falconbridge her son. The sd Mary Shirley is accordingly admitted tenant.[Margin Note: 14 March 1791 Thomas Shirley admitted]

1788 May 21 Great Snoring Manoral Court - It is found that Mary Shirley late a copyhold tenant of this manor died seized of certain messuages holden of this manor and because no person came to this court to be admitted tenant , the 1st proclamation as in due form made.

2(i). Thomas Shirley felmonger of St Martin at Oak Norwich born about 1756 (age at death). He was named in the 1772 will of his uncle John Shirley of Great Snoring Norfolk as eldest son of brother James Sherley; His identity as Thomas Shirley of St Martin at Oak was established in the Manoral Court Rolls of Great Snoring Norfolk in 1791, when he was admitted to the tenancy of lands once held by his uncle John Shirley of Great Snoring; His tenancy at Great Snoring was surrendered only 2 years later in 1793; Thomas Shirley was buried 16 December 1796 age 40 at St Martin at Oak; Will proven at Norfolk 19 January 1797

1791 March 14 Great Snoring Manoral Court - Whereas 22 May 1762, it appears that John Shirley then a copy hold tenant of this manor duly surrendered every his messuage holden of this manor to the use of his last will declared/ And whereas on 10 May 1779 the death of sd John Shirley was found and Mary Shirley his wifow was admitted for life by virtue of his will to the premises. And on 22 May 1788 it was presented by homage that the sd Mary Shirley died siezed of certain messuages of this manor. Now to this court comes Thomas Shirley of St Martins at Oak in the City of Norwich felmonger in his own proper person and produces herein a probate of the last will and testament of the said John Shirley deceased dated 4 June 1772 "...and after her decease I give unto my nephew Thomas Shirley the eldest son of James Shirley...messuages lately the property of Falconbridge lying in Great Snoring..." And thereupon the said Thomas Shirley craves the favor of the Lord of the Manor that he may be admitted tenant to one tenement called Blooms with an orchard in Great Snoring. And the said Thomas Shirley is thereunto admitted tenant. [Margin Note: 5 April 1793 Nicholas Sisson admitted]

Will of Thomas Shirley of St Martin at Oak in City of Norwich fellmonger. Appoint brother James Shirley of Chippenham Park Cambridge, gardener and good friend John Dybak of Upton Co Norfolk farmer executor of my will. To Mary my wife L30. To my father James Shirley L10 and to my sister Mary Shirley L5. Give all my household furniture, plate, linen and china to be equally divided between my said wife and daughter. Residue of my personal estate shall be converted into money, give to my said executors in trust during the minority of my daughter Judith Shirley ...education... maintenance. In case my said daughter die (before date) but leaving issue, I give such residue unto to be equally divided between such issue. But if Judith shall not live to attain said age of 21 (and no issue) then I give L100 to my said father James Shirley, and the remainder to be equally divided between my said brother sister and wife if living. Dated 3 November 1796 <s> Thos Shirley. Proven 19 January 1797 by brother James Shirley and John Dyball executors.

James Shirley, gardener of Chippenham Park born about 1767 (age at death); He inherited L5 in the 1772 will of his uncle John Shirley of Great Snoring Norfolk; He was named in brother Thomas Shirley's 1796 Norfolk will; He was the surety at the 1818 marriage between Henry George Shirley of St Marylebone Middlesex and Sarah Mortlock of Chippenham. He was buried in 1832 age 65 at Chippenham Park Cambridgeshire

His is very likely the Francis Shirley who died at Stanhoe. His will mentions his land at Great Snoring Norfolk

January 19 1797 IR 26/388 [Death Duty] Executors: James Shirley of Chippenham Park, Cambridgeshire, gardiner (brother) and John Dyball of Upton in Norfolk, farmer. Residue of estate converted to money and reserved to daughter Judith Shirley (a minor). But in case she should not reeach age 21, then L100 part to my father James Shirley and the residue divided equally between brother and sister (Mary Shirley) and wife if they all be living.
