Research Note
The parishes occupied by these Shirley families are adjacent
to Godstone parish in Surrey England. Godstone has yet another
very old Shirley family in residence.
Is there a connection to the ancient Shirley family of
Wiston, Sussex (likely a coincidence)
Ditching Manor (in the parish of Balcombe) - The Norfolk
quarter, with half the forest of Worth, was conveyed in 1583
by Philip, Earl of Arundel, and his brothers to John Farnham,
(fn. 22) who in 1584 sold it to Sir Thomas Sherley. (fn. 23)
Sir Thomas, being in debt to the Crown, surrendered it to Queen
Elizabeth and it was re-granted in 1602 to John Middleton and
Anthony Fowle and the heirs of Anthony. From: 'Parishes: Balcombe',

This probate document looks promising for the origin of
the Shirleys of this area:
1650 PCC Will of Sherley, William of Titsey Surrey - William
Shirley of Titsey Surrey husbandman, to be buried in churchyard
of Titsey. That Mr Lactantine Canfey shall preach at my burial,
to my Dame Mary Holman and to her daughter Susan Wood, to Henry
Wood the son of William Wood and Susan his wife and to the wife
of his brother and sisters, to Alice Browne, to John Hall, to
Elizabeth Sherley, to Edward Sherley to son of Edward Sherley,
to Ann Sherley, to Edward the son of Richard Sherley and to his
3 daughters, to brother John Sherley [listed in the margin],
to my brother Richard Sherley executor, friend William Good and
Lantantine Canfey, minister my overseers. Dated 8 Apr 1650 in
presence of Lantantine Canfey, William Good, John Tant, Alice

Richard Shirley of Balcombe
Sussex; His Sussex will was probated 1670 at Lewes
In the name of God Amen, I Richard Shurley of Balcombe
do make this my last will and testament written this one and
twentieth day of October 1667 in manner and form following. First
before all things I give my soul unto the hands of God who made
it hoping and assuredly believing to be saved by the death and
passion of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer and my body to
the earth from whence it was taken to be decently buried at the
discretion of my executor hereinafter named. Imprimis I give
to my son Edward Shurley twelve pence to be paid him just after
my decease if it be demanded. Item I give to my daughter Elizabeth
twelve pounds to be given her within one month after my decease
if it be demanded. Item I give to my daughter Mary twelve pounds
to be
. within five years next after my decease with twenty
shillings a year during the first five if she

if it shall be demanded. Which legacies above to be paid by my

Sussex. She had five known children, maybe others
married 2) Katherine _______ had possibly one known
child. She may have married 2nd William Hitchem in 1670 at Worth
following the death of her husband Richard Shirley.

on 3rd February 1621 in Worth, Sussex (son of Richard & Joan).
He was mentioned in his father Richard's 'Will' of 1667. Edward
left a 'Will' dated 15th March 1680 and was buried on 7th March
1681 in Bolney, Sussex (SIC: may have been buried in 1680 as
will was made after death; also may be a calendar issue).
Memorandum that on or about the thirteenth day of March
in the year of our Lord God (1680) according to the computcon
of the the Church of England I Edward Shirley of Bolney in the
County of Sussex, yeoman being sicke in body & and of the
sickness whereof he shortly after dyed but of sound mind &
pfect memory declared his last will & testamt nuncupative
in these words following or words to the same effect (viz); Inprimis
I give unto my son John Shirley the sume of twenty shillings
to be paid unto him wthin one month after my decease.
All the rest of my goods, chattels, creditts I give & bequeath
unto Alice Shirley my loving wife for and towards the bringing
up of my children: And I nominate & appoynt my said wife
Alice the sole executrix of this my last will; And my will is
that what goods shall be left at the tyme of my wifes decease
shall be equally divided between all of my children if shall
bee then living excepting my son John Shirley to whom I only
give twenty shillings as before is mentioned; these words or
words to the same effect were declared by the said Edward Shirley
wth the intent they should stand for his last will in the pnce

Alice Curtis was baptised on 17th May 1629 in Worth. She was
the daughter of John Curtis (1605-1647) and Joane Hatcher (1611-?).
Alice was mentioned in her father's will, by which she was to
receive a legacy of 40 pounds of lawful money. Alice was mentioned
in her husband's 'will' of 1680. Edward & Alice possibly
had nine or more children.
