My grandfather William Shirley (1902) was born at the oxleathers
in Stafford. His father (John) was in the Coldstream Guards,
Birdcage walk, (buck pal) at the time. I have all of the documents
for this. When he (my grandfather) was still young (but he was
able to remember) William was taken by his mother Margaret Duffy
to Northern Ireland. They travelled on a ferry to belfast and
on the other side they were picked up by a coach and horses.
The coach took them to a place called Elleys lodge, but he remembered
another place called Roach lodge (presumably a finishing lodge)
one or both linked to Castle Coole in Enniskillen which is on
Lough Erne (not Lough Fea, my mistake after all these years and
possibly being mixed up). All he told me was when he got there
they took all of his old clothes and burnt them. They furnished
him with some very expensive (possibly tweed) clothes when he
was there. They appeared to look after him extremely
well. He came back to Stafford at the age of 14 were he found
lodgings and never heard from his family in Northern Ireland
again. Both he and my father always kept an eye on the papers
for any possible news of the family. My grandfathers most treasured
possessions were a pair of army gaters (with his fathers army
number in them) and a photograph of Margaret Duffy (his mother),
which I now have.
I have the army records for the 'John Shirley' marked in as
1876 (this could be 1877 as many were known to lie about their
age to get in the army) this gave me his mothers name 'Sarah
Ann' from Norton in the Moors Staffordshire, but not the fathers
name. In the 1980's I did record information on tape from my
grand parents (whilst they were still alive) and they claim that
Hugh's (1902 1978) (actual name William or Bill)
Grand parents came from Lough [Erne] in Northern Ireland.
We did suspect that the Fermanagh connection could be maternal,
but could not find anything following that route. It also made
no sense as we believe Margret Duffy was in service as a maid.
If her family had the money and life style described by my grandfather
then we would have expected her to be in a much better position.
John was a private in the Coldstream Guards. And
appears as an entry in the 1901 census as such
John Shirley age 24, Private Coldstream Guards, registered for
census in the district of Godstone, Surrey, born 1877 Hanley
Staffordshire.
I have used this but, can not find a birth certificate for him.
I know his mothers name as Sarah Ann (living in Norton in the
moors Staffordshire at the time) from his army records. Army
number obtained from his gaiters left with my grandfather. I
have not been able to find Sarah Ann in Norton in the moors.
I have recently looked up Ely lodge and found it to be a very
large stately home. I was expecting a small cottage (assuming
maternal side of family). We also strongly suspected problems
with this birth (of Hugh my grandfather born 11th
Sept 1902) as it coincides with the time John Shirley went AWOL
from the army.
It also looks like they (or at least the mother) took my grandfather
to Northern Ireland shortly after this.
We were speculating that there may have been a problem as the
birth itself was not registered until 9th September 1916 at Highfields
Castle Church in Stafford. Which fits in with my grandfathers
story that he returned from Northern Ireland to Stafford when
he was 14 having been raised in what he could only describe as
extremely affluent circumstances.
my grand father did his apprenticeship at Castle works for
a company called Bagnells, who used to build engines and coaches
for the railways.
