At the home of her son John Shirley 37 York Street on Saturday
occurred the death of laura A widow of William Shirley of Whitesboro.
She had been ill for the past two months and eath resulted fore
from the infirmity fo age. Her maiden name was Laura Ann Crandall
and she was born in the town of Westmoreland Sept 21 1820 ?(30).
June 17 1848 she was married to William Shirley and until 1863
remained at Clark Mills. At that time she moved to Whitesboro
where her husband was a prominent builder for many years. She
came to Utica about four years ago and had since resided here.
Before coming to Utica when her health permitted she has attended
Beth[ ] church. Besides the son with whom she resided she is
survived by a daughter Mrs Wm T. Finnegan and brother Jason S.
Crandall all of this city. She is also survived by a grandson
Wallace W. Shirley of New York and a grandaughter Mrs C. M. L[
] of Chicago and several nephews and nieces who reside in this
vicinity.

May 21, 1914 buried Westernville Presbyterian Cemetery, Oneida

SHIRLEY, THOMAS A., was born
in Steuben, Oneida county, February 23, 1833, a son of John and
Ann (Grimmit) Shirley, natives of Warwickshire, England, who
came to America in 1826 and located in Utica, where the father,
who was a wheelwright, worked at his trade, also in Steuben,
for several years, later engaged in farming, and in 1841 removed
to Western and worked at his trade up to his death, which occurred
in 1868, aged eighty years. His children were Hannah, William,
Sarah (Mrs. J. P. Savage), John, Elizabeth (who married S. W.
Savage), Thomas A., Jennie, and Mary (Mrs. James Smith). Thomas
A. was reared in Western from eight years of age, and since attaining
his majority has been engaged principally in farming, though
for thirteen years followed boating on the Black River and Erie
Canal. December 27, 1855, he married Sarah, daughter of William
and Sarah (Rowbotham) Pillmore, of Western, and has four children
living: Eliza (Mrs. E. S. Grower), Jennie (Mrs. F. J. Grower),
Lucia and Fred. Mr. Shirley is a member of the M.E. church, has
been justice of the peace of Western four years, and politically

age 64 (b 1795). Parsons Shirley (age 54) is listed in the 1851
Little Wolford census as "brother" of Thomas Shirley
(age 63) and Hannah Shirley a "sister" (age 65) (note:
A Parsons Shirley was chr Feb 14 1808 to Richard and Hannah Shirley
at Feckenham Worcestershire England). William Shirley (age 69,
b abt 1782) with wife Ann (age 71) and dau Sarah (age 42) are
