His children were baptised at St Swithin Worcester, Worcestershire.
He apparently tried to move to St Luke's parish, Middlesex, but
the government prevented his settlement and returned him and
his family to Worcester
Jan 1758 WHEREAS Complaint hath been made by you the Churchwardens
and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint Luke unto
us whose Hands and Seals are hereunto set, two of his Majesty's
justices of the Peace (where- of one is of the Quorum) for the
County of Middlesex afore- said, that Richard Shirley Mary his
Wife & their four Children Namely John Aged about Nine Years
and eight Months Ann Aged about seven Years and Ten Months Mary
Aged about five years & ten Months and Richard Aged about
One Year and Eleven Months are lately intruded into your said
Parish of Saint Luke there to inhabit as Parishioner s contrary
to the Laws relating to the Settlement of the Poor, and are there
likely to become char- geable, if not timely prevented: AND WHEREAS,
upon due Examination and Enquiry made into the Premisses, Upon
the Oath of the said Richard Shirley and other Circumstances
it appears unto Us, and we accordingly adjudge, that the said
Richard Shirley Mary his Wife and their said Four Children are
like to become chargeable unto the said Parish of Saint Luke
and that the last legal Place of Settlement of the said Richard
Shirley his said Wife and Children is in the said Parish of Saint
Swithin in the said City of Worcester THESE are therefore in
his Majesty's Name, to order and re- quire you the said Churchwardens
and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Saint Luke aforesaid,
that you or some of you, do forthwith remove and convey the said
Richard Shirley Mary his Wife and their said Children from your
said Parish of Saint Luke to the said Parish of Saint Swithin
in the City of Worcester and them deliver to the Churchwardens
and Overseers of the Poor there, or some or one of them, together
with this our Warrant or Order, or a true Copy hereof; whereby
they are likewise required, in his Majesty's Name, and by Virtue
of the Statutes in such Case made, forthwith to receive the said
Richard Shirley Mary his Wife and their said Four Children into
their said Parish and provide for them as their own Parishioner
s GIVEN under our Hands and Seals the Thirtieth Day of November
in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty
