of his uncle John Shirley of Marsh House. He was a widower for
the 2nd time in 1881 census; They had 3 servants in the household
in 1881 and in 1891 census; He died June 12, 1903 age 69 years;

In 1881, William Shirley had a cheese factory at his farm
at Rewlach, and his son Samuel was the first secretary of the
Manifold Valley Dairies Association Ltd., which in 1912 had a
cheese factory on the Warslow-Longnor road north-west of Rewlach.

6(ii). John William Shirley born March 1864 in Holms,
Staffordshire, England. Occupation: Farmer, Mill Owner. According
to family tradition, John William Shirley was a mill owner, gambler
- gambled away farmhouse animals etc; moved to Buxton, then left
home about 1911/1912, after failing at milk round. He supposedly
had a violent temper. Lived in Manifold valley, then Buxton.

was 17, he married Sarah Ann Bradbury. Before Marriage he lived

Church. Sarah Ann died on 10 June 1936, she was 72. After marriage

in house on opposite side of the lane. Then moved to Novmanton
House, 35 Dale Road, Buxton, Derbyshire, England. Moved with
all the children after recovering from husband's desertion to151

Shirley died 22 March 1923 at St Michaels NY NY. Whilst an infant
Walter also lived at 15 Henry St Bedminster Bristol Somerset
England. Walter Shirley left Bristol whilst very young and moved
to Chilwell near Nottingham England.In the 1881 UK Census he
was listed as a servant aged 13 years,living at 44 High St Beeston
Nottinghamshire. A few years later he was a servant for a doctor
and moved with the doctor to Filey area in Yorkshire.He was not
there long when the doctor died, so Walter decided to emigrate
to the USA. I understand that when he lived in New York NY he
was a valet?.Walter and Hilda had two sons Edgar born 20 August
1897,and Walter born 16 January 1898. Son Walter was married,
no children and lived in Long Island City until his death on
5 March 1937. Son Edgar Shirley married Jennie Marie Schultz,
their Shirley decendants live in Florida Utah and California.

The family employed 3 servants in their 1901 household. Occupation:
Provision merchant. He died on the way home from a holiday in
the Middle East (Syria, Lebanon, Turkey), and was buried at sea
somewhere between Greece and Italy. The date can probably be
found in old newspapers. It was about 1909. Bristol municipality
book (publ 1899) lists him only as elected alderman from Clifton
Ward in 1897 and that he lost the next election in 1898. Maybe
he was elected after publication of the book.
