Richard Sherley of Brill, Buckinghamshire England

Married Elizabeth _______

Parents of:

Mary Shorley baptised 6 May 1693 at Ludgershall Buckinghamshire, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Shorley

William Shorley baptised 23 May 1695 at Ludgershall Buckinghamshire, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Shorley

John Shorley baptised 24 February 1697 at Ludgershall Buckinghamshire, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Shorley

Thomas Sherley of Salisbury Farm; (aka Shenley Manor, Herts.) baptised 16 December 1698 at Ludgershall Buckinghamshire, son of Richard and Elizabeth Sherley of Brill (although there are 2-3 additional Thomas Shirleys baptised at Ludgershall with different fathers, but a bit earlier in time). His wife was Ann (marriage record not yet found). They had seven children. Thomas died in 1786 in Shenley, Hertfordshire, where his burial record says "of Salisbury Farm". His will was probated at Buckinghashire "of Brill" (Editor, I don't have this burial record)

Editor: We do not have proof that the Thomas Sherley baptised at Ludgershall in 1698 was the Thomas Sherley who died in 1786 at Shenley Herts and was the ancestor of Sherleys in that location. However, the evidence looks good.

1. Parish records show Thomas Sherley of Ludgershall is connected to Brill, 3 children were buried at Ludgershall while he lived at Brill
2. Thomas Sherley of Brill was connected to Shenley Hertfordshire
3. Thomas Sherley of Ludgershall had a child named Edward Sherley who died in Shenley, age at death matches Ludgershall birth date.
4. Edward Sherley of Shenley held land at Brill, occupied by Ann Sherley. Thomas Sherley's wife was Ann Sherley who died at Brill, and a spinster sister named Ann Sherley, both of whom were legatees of Thomas Sherley in his 1786 will.

Salisbury Farm and Hall (aka Shenley Manor) was held by various aristocrats throughout the centuries including the famous Earl of Warwick. The Snell family held the manor in the early 1700s and apparently the Sherleys leased and occupied the manor from the Snell family. Documents show the Sherleys as occupants as early as the 1780s. Interestingly, later occupants of Salisbury Hall were Lady Randolph Churchill and her son Winston Churchill and members of the aircraft de Havilland family.

Salisbury Hall (16th and 17th century)

Thomas Sherley left the lease of Salisbury Farm in his Will to his wife Ann (this is not in the Will, so?). But the occupation of the farm and the Hall becomes rather confused when it is seen that the Land Tax Record shows his son Edward as Occupier of Salisbury Farm.

Salisbury Hall and Farm were owned by a William Snell who also owned land in Brill and there are several legal documents dealing with land and payments of money involving William Snell and his brother and one or more of the Sherley family.
