Sir Wm.
Berkeley arrived as the new Governor of Virginia in 1642. He belonged to
the Bruton, Somerset Co. England family.
He married Philipa Frances Culpeper, widow of Samuel Stephens. (She remarried Philip Ludwell, (2nd cousin of Gov. Berkeley), a member of the Virginia Council. (see Culpeper) Note: Sir Thomas Delaware West was related to the Berkeleys of Berkeley Castle and the Bruton Somerset Co. England Berkeleys. ========================= Charles and John Berkeley, brothers of Gov William Berkeley, were granted extensive proprietary rights in the northern neck of Virginia by Charles II as well as New Jersey and the Carolinas. This charter gave the colonial Governor much trouble to annul.
