David Shirley
born about 1760-65 possibly in Lenoir Co NC; He appears in St Thomas Parish, Cheraws District SC in the 1790 census and then again in the 1800 and 1810 Darlington Co censuses; He was granted 200 acres of land on Cedar Creek in Cheraws District SC on 7 December 1794; David Shirley died between 1810-1820 in Darlington Co SC, after which time his widow Prudence Shirley appeared in federal censusus as head of household.

She moved to Pike Co Alabama and was enumerated there in the 1850 census, age 80; She died about 1850 in Pike Co. AL. She was daughter of James Kelly who was born about 1736 Edgecombe Co. NC and died about 1790 Darlington Co. SC

In 1850 Pike Co AL census, Prudence is enumerated with Ferby b 1800 SC, Dicy b 1810 SC, Martha b 1828 SC, Eliza b 1830 SC, and Catherine b 1837 SC. Prudence was widowed prior to 1820 so cannot be the mother of the last 3

children:

1(i). Kelly Shirley born about 1788 in Chesterfield District (later Darlington County) SC; He died between 1815 and 1823; Kelly Shirley and William Kelly, 1st cousins, were sentenced to hang on April 17, 1812 in Darlington Co. SC for burglary.

1(ii). James Shirley born about 1795 Darlington Co. SC, age 65 in 1850 census. He was enumerated in Pike Co Alabama in 1860 census, age 65; James was a school teacher and farmer. He was blonde, small of stature, a good student, especially of the Bible. He died 31 December 1863

1(iii). Burrell Shirley born about 1797 Darlington Co. SC; He first appears in the 1820 Darlington Co census and then in many early 1820 deed records. He was charged with attempted murder in Oct 1829 in Darlington Co; He appears regularly in deed and census records in the 1830s, 40s and 50s; He was a member of Gum Baptist Church; He died March of 1863 Darlington Co. SC,

1(iv). Feraby Shirley born between 1790 and 1800, age 50 in her mother's 1850 census household (born 1800); She died unknown

1(v). Dicey Shirley born between 1800 and 1810, age 40 in her mother's 1850 census household (born 1810), enumerated in the household of brother James Shirley in 1860 census, widowed with a child John Suggs (age 17. a stepson?); She married 1st ____Suggs sometime between 1850 and 1860, and then 2nd John Dunn; She is possibly the Dicey Shirley who was raped by a slave in Darlington Co in 1825 (legislature document)
