And for 20 acres in both the 1838 and 1839 tax lists; Enumerated
in Cannon Co TN in the 1840 census with large family, age 30-40;
He sold 40 acres of land to Thomas Nokes in 1841; Enumerated
in Cannon Co TN in 1850 census, age 42; He was enumerated at
Woodbury, Cannon Co TN in 1860 census, age 50 with 2nd wife Louise;
He died in 1865 in Cannon Co. TN
"Luke Shirley was born in East Tennessee (probably
in Carter or Greene Co) on December 2 1807 to George and Elizabeth
Poland Shirley. His date of birth was recorded by family mmebers
who migrated to Illinois then to California. It corresponds with
the birthdate given on census records. If Luke moved to Illinois
with his mother, after his father's death, he did not reside
there long. He married margaret Marcum about 1830. Their first
child was born in 1831. No marriage record has been found. His
name is not found on 1830 census. Willie Gray Shirley told me
that he understood that the Shirleys came from illinois to Tennessee
in search of cheap land.' Margaret Marcum Shirley died Feb 12
1858 according to family records....Luke Shirley died in Cannon
County in 1865. No will was probated." - Cannon County

appeared to the court that the petitioner is the widow of Luke
Shirley dec, that sd Shirly died seized and possessed of a tract
of land of about 170 acres and that she is entitled to one third
part of the same in value as dower. It is therefore ordered by
the court that A B Carnes, Joseph Melton and David B Evans be
and they are hereby appointed commissioners to go upon the premises
and lay off and assyn to Louisa Shirly one third part in value
of the land of Luke Shirly decd, including the dwelling house
etc and make their report to the next term of this court, all
things not herin adjudged are reserved till the coming in of
sd report.

Warren Co. TN (Note Cannon Co TN was formed from Warren Co
in 1836), age 19 in parent's 1850 census household; He served
in the CSA 1st Tennessee Battalion (Colm's) Company S. He died
on 13 January 1863 during the Civil War at Port Hudson, LA. Prior
to the war, the family lived in Warren Co,. TN with their four
children. He went to war, took the measles and died. Wife Eliza
received his knife and pocket book, but not permitted to get
his body. When she received word of his death, she got on her
horse with her baby and came to her father's house and spent
the night. The next morning she and her father went about
20 miles in a wagon pulled by oxen to get the three children
at Esquire Warren's, a neighbor, and bring what was most needed
in the wagon. She had to sell the rest of her belongings as her
father was to old to make another trip. She lived on her father's
farm in a rent house and raised her children.

Shirley born in Cannon County Tennessee Oct 30, 1874 was the
8th child of Newton Jasper and Sarah Seal Shirley. His family
moved to Hill County Texas in the 1880's and he alone returned
to round up horses and ship them from Kansas City to Tennessee.
His first wife was Mollie Knight, whom he married in Hillsboro,
Texas in 1893. On August 5, 1900 he married Mary Shirley who
was the daughter of his first cousin. He served as Sheriff of
Cannon County Tennessee from 1910 to 1914. The family lived in
Woodbury, the county seat. William, Mary and their children moved
to Nashville in 1919 where he worked for the State of Tennessee.
His official title was Transportation Officer for the Tennessee
State Prison. Unofficially he was known as a "long chain
man". His primary duty was to travel to other towns and
cities and escort prisoners back to Nashville. At times he was
the lone guard for a dozen or more men. They were joined together
by hand cuffs and let irons and chains and were transported by
train. Once on board the chain had to be stretched out in order
for the prisoners to be seated. William left state employment
and worked on the police force for the powder plant at Old Hickory,
TN during WWI. Later he became a railroad detective for the Louisville
to New Orleans. He retired as Chief Detective. When the government
shipped whiskey by rail during the Prohibition he rode with the
shipment until it was unloaded to prevent a train robbery. He
knew Frank James, brother of the Jesse James, following Frank's
release from prison. He also claimed kin to Belle Starr since
she too was a Shirley. This kinship has not been substantiated.
After the death of his second wife, he took as his 3rd wife Lula
Ella Nalls. William Shirley died in 1942. Mrs. Shirley continued
to live in their home on Elkins Ave in Nashville until 1979.
