Shirley born about 1805
in Barren Co. KY. Isaac Shirley appears in Shelby Co IL records
as early as 1830 census with wife and 2 young male sons in the
household; He is enumerated again in Shelby Co IL in 1840 census
age 30-40, with a growing family in the household; He appears
in local Shelby Co IL records beginning in 1834 through about
1844. He moved to Linn Co Missouri by the time of the 1850 census,
married with children, age 45, born Kentucky. He was an outspoken
abolitionist and was forced to move from Linn Co Missouri to
Douglas Co Kansas in 1854. Isaac Shirley died in 1858 at Douglas

The History of Shelby and Moultrie
Counties Ill - Windsor Township, Shelby Co Illinois - "...The
third house was put up by Isaac Sherley, a short distance east
of where Moberly settled, now known as the Joseph Walker place.
Moberly and Sherley were brothers-in-law, and came here together.
They brought with them a load of salt, and part of a barrel of
whiskey, for which they found a ready sale, to the settlers on
Richland and Jordan creeks. Sherley did not remain long; he was
of a roving disposition. He died in Kansas some years ago...."
married Elizabeth Cox. She died in 1876. She was enumerated
in the 1870 census for Lecompton Township, Douglas Co Kansas.
Children Franklin and Mary E. were living with her in the household.

2(i). Wilburn Shirley born 26 February 1828 Shelby Co. IL.
He died 1880 Jefferson Co. KS. In 1849 Wilburn joined a wagon
train with his own ox team and went to California where he mined
for gold, quite successfully. Later, he came back to Lynn Co.
MO. In 1853, Mr. and Mrs. Shirley and their three children, Margaret,
John Lafayette and Marion Moses came overland by ox team to Lecompton
Kansas. Wilburn, like his father, Isaac, was a "free state"
man and was a radical Abolitionist. He is indexed in the 1860
Lecompton Douglas Co KS census as "Shuley", age
33 born Illinois, occupation: Farmer; In 1860, he sold the 160
acres in Lecompton and located in Kaw Township, Jefferson Co.
Kansas. This move in 1860 was the beginning of the Jefferson
County Shirleys. Enumerated in Jefferson County in 1870 census,
age 41, born Illinois; Enumerated at the same place in 1880 census,
age 52, born Illinois; After settling in Kaw Twp., Wilburn became
prominent among the citizens. For many years he was a Justice
of the Peace and in politics was a useful member of the Republican
party. His religious belief coincided with that of the Baptist
church but there being no organization of that kind in the community,
he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Both Wilburn and
his wife Louisa died in the fall of 1880, just three weeks apart.
Four of Wilburn's sons lived and farmed in Jefferson Co.
They were John L., Marion Moses, George Thomas "Tom",
and Ennus P.
married Louisa Prather on 3 February 1848 in Lynn Co. MO. She
was age 32 in 1860 census of Douglas Co KS, age 51 in 1880 census;
She died in 1880.

He was born 22 March 1850 son of Moses Dale Shirley; He was Margaret's

3(ii). John Lafe Shirley born about 1851 MO, age
9 in 1860 census, age 19 in 1870 census. John lived Douglas County
Kansas until nearly ten years of age and attended school in the
old-fashioned log school school houses where the tuition was
made by subscriptions. He remained with his parents, working
for his father until he reached his majority, when he took charge
of the farm home and conducted it until 1877. Enumerated in Kaw
Jefferson Co KS in 1880 census, married with wife and child in
the household, age 28 born Missouri; Enumerated again at Kaw
Jefferson Co, age 50 with wife and large family in 1900 census;
After their marriage, Lafe began his farming operation with forty
acres of raw, uncleared land and by strict attention to business,
energy, industry and perseverance he added to his possessions
until he owned and operated 300 acres. A larger home was built
along with several barns, feed lots, etc. He engaged in general
farming and stock raising and in feeding both cattle and hogs.
Among the horses were good grades of Clydesdales. He was active
in Masonic work in which he was faithful and found much pleasure.
He died 1926. After his death, his widow, Plutina, lived
with her daughter, Nora, and died at age 85 from shock after
having been struck by a farm truck in the farmyard at Nora's.
married Plutina Hodges on 4 March 1876 in Topeka. She was a
native of Surrey Co. North Carolina who had moved to Kansas in
1872 with her parents. Age 24 in husband's 1880 census household

1880 census, age 23 in parent's 1900 census household. She died
in 1942. She married Walter Beeler
4(ii). Lue Belle Shirley born about 1880 in Kansas, age 20 in
parent's 1900 census household. She died in 1966. She married
Fred Romig
4(iii). James Garfield Shirley
born about 1882 in Kansas,
age 18 in parent's 1900 census household. He died in 1966
married Sophia Stein

5(ii). Helen Shirley She married Mr. Seeds of Ft. Worth,
Texas
4(iv). Roll Shirley born about 1886 in Kansas, age 4 (sic)
in parent's 1900 census household. Roll Shirley attended the
country school, spent some time at Kansas State University before
going to Emmet, Idaho where he was with his uncle Birden Hodges
for several months. Upon returning home he joined his father
in the operation of the family farm. Included in the many acres
that they took care of were several pastures. Many days after
working all day in the filed, Roll would load tanks of water
on the wagon, hitch up the horses and haul water to the cattle
in the pastures when the wind had failed to turn the windmills.
Farming in those days was more different that it is today with
all the mechanical equipment available. Grace Duncan was
the daughter of George and Hattie Duncan. Hattie, her mother,
died when Grace was twelve. She moved to Topeka where she lived
and worked in the Collins boarding House. Later she worked worked
in the Fair Store. About this time she was stricken with rheumatism
and was hospitalized several months and nearly died. This illness
left her with a stiff knee. She then moved to the home of her
sister and brother in law, Kate and Sam Barnes, about 1909, to
recuperate. She worked for the Victor Dinnen Family and during
this time she met Roll Shirley and after a courtship of eight
years, they married. They lived on the Garfield Shirley farm
at Thompsonville until the end of 1920 when they moved into the
new little four-room house built on the Lafe Shirley farm. About
1940 Roll's mother, Plutina, moved to Grantville to live with
Nora. Then Roll and Grace Shirley moved into the home place.
At this time Irene Shirley and Ralph Nail were married and moved
into the little house. Ralph helped Roll with faming. He died
on 17 September 1960 of emphysema. After Roll's death in 1960
Grace continued to live in the home place. She suffered a stroke
in 1969 which left her paralyzed on the right side. With therapy
she regained the use of her right hand to the extent she could
write and feed herself. She never left the house after. She had
an heart attack and died November 21, 1872.

married Amelia Matthias. She continued to live at the family
home about 2 1/2 miles east of Grantville, Jefferson Co. Kansas
after the death of her husband, Theodore.

1852 at Lynn Co. MO, age 8 in 1860 census, age 17 in 1870 census.
Enumerated at Kaw Jefferson Co KS in 1910 census, married with
children, age 56, born Missouri; He was a well respected farmer
and stockman. He raised full-blooded Poland China hogs, high
grade shorthorn cattle and horses. In 1887 he established a mean
market in Grantville. He died in 1935
married Elizabeth Givens She was born in 1864; Elizabeth was
an active church member working particularly in women's organizations
of the Methodist Church. She died 1944.

Shirley born about 1855
MO, age 5 in 1860 census, age 15 in 1870 census, age 24 in 1880
census (born Kansas). Enumerated at Kaw Jefferson Co KS in 1910
census, married with children, age 54, born Missouri; Tom was
considered one of the leading stockmen and farmers of the area.
Florence was a devoutly religious woman and instrumental in the
development of the Grantville Methodist Church. She was also
on the Executive Board of the Methodist Home in Topeka KS for
many years. He died in 1937.
married Florence McHenry in 1882, Grantville, KS. She was born
1860 and died 1959 (99 years of age)

and Zillah Howell.

State Census, age 42, born Missouri; Enumerated at Lecompton
Douglas Co KS in 1910 census, age 56, born Missouri; He was age
62 in 1915 Kansas State Census for the same town and county;
He and his wife lived on the Isaac Shirley farm as the second
generation. He died in 1938.

on 19 December 1877 at
Douglas Co KS. She had come from Virginia to Kansas in 1877.
She attended Lane University and was converted in the old chapel
and joined the United Brethren Church. She died in 1929.

Obituary:
Robert Franklin Shirley (Bob), beloved husband, father, and Grandpop,
passed away on April 3, 2021 at the age of 87 from Covid Pneumonia.
Born on January 25, 1934, in Marshall, TX to E.R. (Jake) Shirley
and Lucille Petrey Shirley, Bob was raised in Dallas, TX where
he attended Cathedral School for Boys and later St. Mark's School
of Texas. An avid high school athlete, he was a four-year letterman
in both basketball and football, lettered in track and was captain
of the football team. He always looked forward to football season
and continued to remain passionate about high school football,
often attending local games. After graduating from St Mark's
in 1953, he attended Texas Wesleyan College, where he earned
his undergraduate degree in Political Science. He then entered
the US Army in 1957. Following his enlistment, Bob taught elementary
school in Corpus Christi and later reenlisted in 1964. It was
in 1968, while teaching full time and attending law school at
St. Mary's University in San Antonio, his Army Reserve Unit was
called to active duty. He proudly served his country during the
Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star for acts of heroism.
He remained active with the Army Reserves for over 30 years,
until retirement. After returning from Vietnam, Bob earned a
Master's in Education from Texas Wesleyan College. He spent his
life working as a teacher, guiding and caring for students, particularly
those who were underprivileged and had special needs. He spent
much of his career as a professional educator in Fort Worth ISD,
Castleberry ISD, Dallas Can Academy, and Fort Worth Can Academy.
He is survived by his wife Dana Dane Shirley; daughter Jana Best
of Oak Harbor, WA and her husband Jerry; daughter Kate Shirley
Studdard of Plano and her husband, Scott; daughter Clarissa Shirley
of Plano; sister Laura Shirley Blakeley of Dallas; grandson Ian
Best and wife Alysha of Mukilteo, WA; granddaughter Johanna Best
Cronshaw and husband Christopher of Santa Barbara, CA; and great
granddaughter Margaret Best of Mukilteo, WA.
