2(i). John "Judge" Shirley born about 1794 VA  died in 1876 Scyene Texas (now a Dallas suburb). On Jan 26, 1835 John and 2nd wife Fannie sold a 1/2 section in Clark Co. IN that John had bought from David Worth Oct 7, 1829 (Floyd Co. Books D page 234 and G page 604).  An abandoned cemetery at the Knobs has a tombstone for Clarissa, daughter of J. and F. Shirley d. Mar 30, 1836 in her 8th year. (Her birth date would be before the marriage of John and Fannie, but must be their daughter). On June 30, 1848 John Shirley was granted a patent on 800 acres south east of Medoc. In the 1850 census of Jasper Co. MO we find John and Eliza with Charlotte A. 12 years (born 1838 Indiana), John A.M. 8 years (born 1842 Missouri), Myra 2 years (born 1848 Missouri), Benton 9 months (born 1849 Missouri) living in the household. In the 1850 census slave schedule, John Shirley is shown as the owner of 8 slaves. On Mar 16, 1850 he sold 160 acres to David Martin for $700. In June 1851 John Shirley bought two quarter-acre lots from John and Matilda Richardson located in the town of Carthage. In 1856 John Shirley sold this farm to George W. Broome. On Mar 29, 1861 George W. Broome advertised this same farm in the Carthage Southwest News..."600 acres of spring River bottom land situated in Jasper Co. about three miles northwest of Sherwood, and on one of the most beautiful streams in the west. There is 100 acres in cultivation, has on it a small apple orchard, dwelling house, kitchen, stable and c., has a good well. The larger portion of it is heavily timbered; stone coal is abundant in the vicinity, and a more desirable stock farm could not be found in the Southwest." John Shirley's real estate holdings increased from $600 in 1850 to $4000 real estate and $6000 personal property in 1860. John Shirley kept a hotel and tavern in Carthage which included a livery stable and blacksmith shop. In the 1860 census John is recorded as a hotel keeper in Jasper Co. MO with property worth $10,000. In the settlement of his father Christian Shirley's estate in 1865 John received 6 20/100 acres. In 1873 the court recorded that John Shirley of Jasper Co. MO did not pay taxes on the land for a number of years, and the land and debt was assumed by Denton Shirley, brother of John. The Floyd Co. IN records further show that John Shirley died by 1877 and that on April 17, 1877, a quit-claim was signed by Eliza Shirley, John Shirley and Myra Walker, all of Jasper Co. MO. (John's widow, his son and daughter).

BELLE STARR'S RECORD. The Daughter of an Ohio Emigrant and the Avenger of a Brother's Murder. FORT SMITH, Ark., Feb. 10 - According to a lawyer of this city who knew Belle Starr from her infancy and defended her in each of her trials here, her father, John Shirley, removed to Carthage, Mo., from Ohio, twenty years before the war and kept a hotel known as the Carthage House, where Myra Shirley was born. Her early days were spent at home and nothing occurred to break the family circle until her eldest brother, Allison Shirley, was killed towards the end of the war by Kansas Jayhawkers. The day after the murder Myra was in the saddle in hot pursuit of her brother's murderers. The prevalence of border warfare and the great number of struggling troops then in Southwestern Missouri gave the young daredevil ample opportunity to show her prowess, and the wayward girl never again went home to stay, but linked her fortunes with the famous band of guerillas head by Quantrell. After Quantrell's gang disbanded Myra fell in with the James and Younger brothers, and married with Cole Younger. Thereafter the daughter was the famous beauty and desperado Pearl Younger. While on a visit to her aged father in Texas she met and married a desperado named Reed. This son was one of the first to reach her dead body last Monday. Reed was shot and killed by United States officers at Paris, Texas, and in 1869, and it was just before his death that the woman, then known as Belle Reed, stole $32,000 from Walt Grayson, a Cherokee Indian, forcing him to deliver the money at the muzzle of a six-shooter. She claimed to be an Indian, and was tried in an Indian court. To find her guilty would have been like assaulting the entire neighborhood, and the court acquitted her. As soon as Reed was buried Belle married a full-blooded Creek Indian, named Sam Star, and thenceforth she was known as Belle Starr. Their honeymoon was spent in this city, in the United States Court, where both were tried and found guilty of horse stealing and sent to the Detroit jail. Upon her return to the Indian country she was arrested for larceny and acquitted. Sam Starr was killed in a brawl about four years ago, and Belle then married Jim Starr, alias Bill July, her late husband's brother.

February 7, 1889, Dallas Daily Times Herald,
GAINESVILLE, Tex., Feb. 5.--Capt. Bodine, from Eufaula, today, gives the following particulars of the killing of Belle Starr: On Monday, she had been in town during the day and had started to her home, about six miles distant. When about half that distance had been traveled on horseback, she was shot by some person unknown, the ball entering her heart and presumably killing her instantly. The riderless horse went home and Belle's daughter mounted him and rode back in search of her mother, whom she found lying dead in the middle of the road. A large number of persons visited the premises to view the remains of the dead woman. Belle Star, the desperado woman, was well known to every old citizen and officer in Dallas county. They recall her as a handsome woman, a graceful equestrian, and a crack marksman with a faultless nerve. She possessed commendable courage and would face any danger without flinching. Mira Reed, and was in the city about eight weeks ago on a visit. While here, she sent for several of the old time officers to call on her. Her daring and recklessness found origin, perhaps, in the Indian blood which coursed her veins.

3(vi). Edwin Benton Shirley born about 1850 MO; killed 1866 TX; apparently buried in a now unmarked grave in old Scyene Cem., Scyene TX

"The Shirley's fourth child, Edwin Benton, was somewhat of a problem child. John Shirley required Ed to help out with his horse ranch and with his livery stable in Carthage where he both sold horses nad rented hacks. Ed, as did all of John's children, became an accomplished horseman at an early age. Ed was constantly in trouble, and was arrested and charged on many occasions for stealing horses. After moving to Texas with the rest of the family in 1864, Ed continued to be a horse thief. Texas records show that Ed was charged in horse theift cases there on May 3 1866 and on Oct 24 1866. he was shot and killed by a man named Palmer from Collin County in the Chamber Creek Bottom later that year. He was only sixteen years old at the time of his death." - Starr tracks: Belle and Pearl Starr, By Phillip W. Steele. p25.

"Aunt Annie, the Shirley's ex-slave, reported to the Dallas Times-Herald in her 1894 interview that this boy had not been seen for years, and that Mrs Shirley assumed he was dead." - Starr tracks: Belle and Pearl Starr, By Phillip W. Steele. p25-26/
