SILAS SHIRLEY has been one of Sarpy county's industrious and enterprising farmers since 1867, in which year he bought 40 acres of land in Laplatte precinct from Peter Lewis, and he has devoted his entire time to the development of that tract ever since its purchase. At the time he became the possessor of this property, the land had been improved but little, and it had only a small frame house. He has since remodeled and enlarged the house, besides erecting a good barn and several outbuildings, and he has also made a wonderful improvement by the cultivation of the soil. One of the largest yields of oats in Sarpy county is the record of 83 bushels to the acre, held by our subject; his average yield, however, is 50 bushels to the acre. He has a fine grove of shade trees around his house and has, besides, a good orchard and a vineyard. Mr. Shirley was born in Ontario county, New York, in 1829, and is a son of Philander Shirley, who was a farmer until his death in Seneca county, and married Charlotte A., a daughter of James M. and Laura R. Kinney) Wilkinson, who moved to Bellevue, Nebraska, in 1856. Her father ran a stage formerly and was later probate judge in Butler county, Nebraska. Although Silas Shirley and his wife are the parents of no children, they have nevertheless reared several, and when one has grown up and started out to face the world, Mr. and Mrs. Shirley were ever ready to make a happy home for another. The above petition by sister Florinda Shirley is curious. It lists the heirs of Alexander Shirley upon his death. It says Alexander left no widow, and clearly omits any children or grandchildren as heirs. Wife Emily is documented in the 1880 census, but what about the children we show below and the grandchildren who lived with Alexander in the 1880 census?

"Pearl was a very forward thinking and interesting person back in her Victorian day. Her house had been one of the designated homes to help smuggle slaves up north in the "underground railroad!"  One of the neatest things I inherited from her directly was a very old and gothic needlework sampler (it's either needlepoint or crewel.) This sampler is rather large and is of the "Our Father" Lords prayer on a heavy needlework paper in a heavy frame. What is so interesting about this piece, is that on the back, there were two small holes in the wood planking. Holes made intentionally. When held up to the light, you can see through the holes, through the needlework, at what's beyond. When we took this off the wall in her farm house, there were also very small holes in the wall adjacent to the holes in the wood backing of this piece. As the story goes, this was so that you could spy from one room to another. Because there were periodic inspections and raids of homes that were suspected to be helping the slaves! There were also trap doors in the floor under area rugs and trap doors in closets of rooms that were connected. When I was a tiny little girl, and my Mom & one of her brothers were cleaning out the house, my sister and I played all day running from one room to another through the closets and trap doors. It was sooo magical. This house was so unusual and huge and old, it was like a museum!" (Lisa Gammons sent this info)
