Richard

of Calvert co. in 1686. So 1665 would be a good guess for his
birthdate. He

is possibly born about 1684, putting Catherine Miles Wiseman's

About this family:
Shirley News Apr/May 1990 - "Among old letters and
photos given to me by my paternal grandmother is a dagurerreotpe
of her paternal grandmother, Henrietta Warthon, nee Shirley.
A letter dated in 1852, telling great grandfather of Henriettas'
death, once contained a lock of her hair. It was red, like grandmother's.
She is buried in the Old Mountain Cemetery near Mount aint Mary's
College, Emmitsburg Frederick Co MD. her tombstone bears the
informatin that Henrietta was born in St Mary's Co MD that he
was 66 when he died an that she was the mother of three sons
and one daughter. In the same cemetery are buried her brother
John Shirley who died in 1863 and a Richard Shirley, possibly
John's son who was buried March 6 1822. In addition to the brother,
Henrietta had at least three sisters, one of whom Elizabeth was
Mrs John Dabelstein. The others were Sisters Mary Clare and Mary
Magdalen Shirley nuns trained in their vocation by Saint Elizabeth
Ann Seton. Clare died in 1844 and is buried in the cemetery at
St Joseph's Provincial House, Emmitsburg. Magdalen Ann Shirley
was born about 1801 and died in the 1870s buried in New York.
Growing up I often heard my grandmother and her sister grandaunt
Ida Kephart refer to their grandaunt "Betsy Dabelstein"
. She and John Dabelstein were married at St John the Evangelist
Catholic Church Frederick City in 1821. According to Aunt Ida,
John Dabelstein became a judge in Cumberland MD. In a letter
dated in the 1850s-60s reference is made to Lizzie Shirley's
brother "Nace" who went to New Jersey fathered three
children and died "without his poor mother knowing if he
were in his church or not." - letter from Ed Duggan to the
Shirley Association in 1990 (See St Mary's Co)
children:
2(i). Richard Shirley - A Richard Shirley was listed

as one of the heirs at law, children of Ignatius Shirley in 1810,

sister Henrietta, this particular John Shirley died in 1863 and
was buried at Old Mountain Cemetery near Mount aint Mary's College,
Emmitsburg Frederick Co. John Shirley who appears regularly in

no wife or family.
2(iv). Elizabeth Shirley - according to descendants
of her sister Henrietta, she married John Dabelstein at St John's
Catholic Church, Frederick Co., MD;
2(v). Mary Shirley. Born say 1785 in Maryland. She
married Ignatius Aud, son of John Aud at the Catholic Church
on December 19, 1805 in St Mary's County. Mary Shirley apparently
died prior to 1821 when her husband married 2nd Ann Louise Watt.

Mary Clare who is said to have died 1844 and buried in the cemetery
at St Joseph's Provincial House, Emmitsburg

according to descendants, she was born in St Mary's Co MD and

There is an intriguing death document that might point
to this family. Charles Shirley born 1851 in New York City to
Ignatius Shirley and Susan Clark. He died 15 January 1907. Lived
243 W. 66th Street NYC. The following John/George/Ignatius
born 1821 cannot be Ignatius Jr since Sr died in 1807

2(ix). Ann Shirley - born about 1801; Catholic nun
named Magdalina Shirley working as the Assistant Principal sister
at the Orphan Asylum in New York City in 1860 census, age 59
(b MD); Supposedly died in New York in the 1870s (Note: An
Ann M. Shirley is also listed as a teacher in the NY Orphan Asylum
in 1860, age 40 b Ireland - likely a coincidence)
The following Shirley family are clearly descended from
the above family
1. Robert Shirley - Served in the Maryland regiment
in the Revolutionary War. He died 20 July 1782. Clearly related
to the above Shirley families, but this Robert Shirley is apparently
too young to be the Robert Shirley identified in the 1747 will
of his father Richard Shirley Jr of St Mary's Co MD.
1780-1782 Robert Shirley, Private, served in the same companies
with Bennett and William Shirley. Robert enlisted on August 1,
1780 and died July 20, 1782. Robert received 124 shillings and
40 pence for his service. (Commissioner of Army Accounts, Pay
Accounts, No. 1, 1780-84, f 118). Revolutionary War Records
1. George Shirley - Served in the Maryland regiment
in the Revolutionary War. He died 24 Aug 1778. Clearly related
to the above Shirley families. It doesn't seem likely he is the
same George Shirley who was named in his father Richard Shirley
Sr's 1737 will.
1778 George Shirley on May 31, 1778 enlisted from St. Mary's
County for 9 months as a Private, in the Third Regiment, Maryland.
He served approximately 3 months until August 24, 1778 when he
was listed as discharged with entry "Died". (Revolutionary
War Muster Roll, 1776-80, f 201; Archives of MD, American Revolution
1775-1783, Volume 18, f 164 & 329). Revolutionary War Records
1778 George Shirley, Private, died Aug 24, 1778, 3rd Maryland
line. Return of Substitutes, Drafts, and Vagrants June 10, 1778
