Family traditional story says Richard was the son of Richard
Shirley and wife, Margaret, who were dismissed from the Broad
Run Baptist church June 12, 1774 in Fauquier Co. VA to go to
Culpeper Co. VA. On Jan 22, 1785 they were among the charter
members of the Old Turkey Creek Baptist church in Abbeville Co.
South Carolina. Another traditional story says Richard was the
brother of John Shirley branch #2, who married Eliz. Barmore.

of her father. She married Henry Holsclaw
1(ii). Amey (?Anney) Shirley named as a daughter in
the estate of her father. She was not married in 1797 at the
time her father's estate was administered; nothing more known
1(iii). Susannah (Sukey) Shirley born October 1, 1769
VA. Named as a daughter in the estate of her father. She died
April 29, 1848 Boone Co. IN. She married Benjamin Smith who was
born Sept 15, 1769 VA d. Sept 5, 1853 Boone Co. IN, buried
Old Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

1785 January 29 - Turkey Creek (of Saluda) Church, constituted
on January 29, 1785, by Joseph Redding, and admitted to the Charleston
Association the next year. The constituents, sixteen in number,
and later other members, signed a covenant of fourteen articles
in which the Philadelphia Confession was adopted as a standard
of faith and practice. Turkey Creek was thus a Regular Baptist
