William
Shirley
- said to be born Brighton England (Bristol NY death record).
It is more likely he was born in Broughton Oxfordshire England,
possibly the William Shirley baptised 10 March 1793, son of Edward
and Mary Shirley); He is likely the William Shirley who immigrated
with his wife Hannah (sic) and family through the Port of New
York in 1832; He may be the William Shurley enumerated in Rochester,
Monroe Co NY census, age 40-50 (born 1790-1800) with wife and
2 daughters (no sons in household. 1855 NY census states Fanny
Jerome (Shirley?)'s son William Jerome was born in Monroe Co,
so maybe Fanny's father William was close by?). William Shirley
was enumerated in the 1850 Bristol, Ontario Co NY federal census,
age 60 (born about 1790, census taker clearly sloppy with
dates) with wife Susannah and 2 children John and Anna Shirley;
Enumerated in his son John Shirley's household in the 1844 New
York State Census, age 58 "father" (born 1797); Once
again enumerated with wife Susannah in son John Shirley's census
household in 1860, age 65 occupation day laborer (born about
1795). Same in 1865 New York State Census, age 70 "father",
and again in 1880 Federal Census for Ontario Co New York, age
90, born about 1790 England
Newspaper accounts
in early 1888 e.g. the Sun newspaper of New York City
reported on the advanced age of William Shirley of Bristol, and
stated that he claimed to have fought with Wellington at the
Battle of Waterloo
The Sun, February
25, 1888, Page 2 - Old and Hearty. men and Women of Ontario County
who have Reached a Great Age - Canandaigua, Feb 24 - [profiles]
William Shirley of Bristol who is about a year younger than Sullivan
(prior man profiled, age 103) is a native of England and was
one of the stalwart soldiers of Wellington's army in the battle
of Waterloo. He is vigorous and healthy and is able to do considerable
work, but he cannot cope with Uncle Sullivan [the prior man profiled
in this story]
William Shirley
died 25 June 1888 at "100 years" of age (source: tombstone,
newspaper accounts); Buried Codding Cemetery, Bristol, Ontario
Co NY; His tombstone is curiously shared with William Jerome
born 1847, Edward Jerome's grave next to William Shirleys. It
is likely William Jerome is William Shirley's grandson? Edward
Jerome married Fanny _____ and she is likely Fanny Shirley, daughter
of William Shirley (as per immigration record, English baptism
record, see below. But not proven as yet)

Historian email 2000: "Death record for William Shirley

this be Broughton (Oxfordshire), not Brighton?

children:
Other than
son John Shirley who is proven, the following theorized children
listed below and their baptism dates are based on the assumption
William Shirley and wife Hannah (sic Susannah/Hannah?) are the
people identified having arrived on the ship Robert Browne at
the Port of New York in 1832. And they are the family residing
and baptising children at Broughton Parish Oxfordshire. The evidence
is convincing, but errors still possible

4. The Bristol
Town Historian alerted us that William Shirley who died in 1888
at Bristol was stated in local Bristol death records to have
been born in "Brighton" England. We suspect this is
a small error, should be "Broughton" England instead?

Email from
Carter July 2023
- I am descended from some Shierleys from the area of Johnstown,
NY. The closest Shierley to me is my 3rd great-grandmother Sarah
Jane Shierley who was born August 18, 1840 in Lewis County, NY
and died January 30, 1911 in Johnstown, NY. Her FindAGrave ID
is 120009375. She married Edward Parramore sometime between 1855
and 1860 in Johnstown, NY. Edward was born on February 10, 1830
in East Farleigh, Kent, England and immigrated to America in
the 1850s. His earliest appearance in an American census is in
Johnstown, NY, married to Sarah Jane Shierley.
I have found
Sarah in both the 1850 Federal Census and the 1855 NY Census
with her family before marriage. In 1850 she and her family lived
in Boonville, Oneida County, NY. In 1855 they lived in Johnstown,
Fulton County, NY. Her father is named George Shierley born about
1818 in England. Her mother is Hannah, born about 1814 in England.
I am unsure when they immigrated to America, and I do not know
if they married in England or America.
Sarah Jane
Shierley is their oldest child, and all their children that I
know of were born in New York. I do not know when George Shierley
nor his wife Hannah died, for the only records I have of them
is the 1850 and 1855 censuses. In these censuses, Sarah Jane
Shierley is listed as having a number of younger siblings: Maria
Shierley (born about 1839, but this must be wrong since Sarah
is listed as older), Charlotte J. Shierley (born about 1841),
J. George Shierley (born about 1847), and John H. Shierley (born
Feb 1850). John H. Shierley probably died in infancy because
he was listed as six months old in the 1850 census but does not
appear in the 1855 census.
Sarah Jane
Shierley and Edward Parramore had at least nine children: Caroline,
William, Silas, Elizabeth (my 2nd great-grandmother), Edward,
Charles, Cora, Jennie, and Amy. This is the extent of my knowledge
of my Shierley ancestors.
I was hoping
for help researching my Shierley ancestors. I am hoping to find
out where in England they came from and the maiden name of George
Shierley's wife Hannah. I would like to find out what happened
to George and Hannah after 1855 as well. I would greatly appreciate
any assistance you could render to me in this task.

16 December 1864 at Schenectady NY. He was age 18 at the time.
His records indicate he was born New York, occupation laborer,
eyes blue, hair brown, complexion fair 5' 4" tall; He was
listed as absent without leave, to be arrested as a deserter,
