MISC INFORMATION FOR RICHARD SHIRLEY BRANCH #1
Richard Shirley and his three sons Robert, John and Thomas received a Royal land grants in South Carolina in the 1760's. They settled in Craven and Berkley Co. South Carolina and their first settlements was called SHIRLEYTOWN on Raburn Creek in what is now known as Laurens Co.
Richard Shirley Aug 11, 1768 received a Royal land grant of 500 acres was surveyed in Berkley Co. on a branch of Saluda River called Raburn Creek and bounded on all sides by vacant land. This was recorded Feb 15, 1769 signed John Caldwell.
Robert Shirley Aug 11, 1768 received a Royal land grant of 300 acres was surveyed in Berkley Co. on Beaverdam, a branch of Stephens Creek. (Stephens Creek is in what is now known as Edgefield Co. South Carolina).
John Shirley Aug 28, 1767 obtained a land grant of 200 acres on Raburn Creek. Jan 31, 1788 he and his wife, Rebecca, of Laurens Co. SC sold to William Mitchell 200 acres in Laurens Co. SC which was granted to John Shirley Aug 29, 1767 on Raburn Creek, witnesses were Aaron Starnes, William Goodman and signed by John and Rebecca Shirley.
Thomas Shirley. No proof if he is the Thomas mentioned in the next paragraph.
There was a Thomas Shirley who served in Colonial Wars from South Carolina under Col. Richard Richardson from Craven County SC in 1759-1760 in the expedition against the Cherokee Indians. On June 4, 1772 Thomas Shirley received 500 acres on Roberts Creek of Pacolet River in Craven County bounded by vacant land. On the same day another 500 acres adjacent to his own on Roberts Creek of Pacolet River. On Sept 26, 1772 he received 500 acres in Craven Co. on the Wateree Creek of the Catawba River adjoining William Gwin and Richard Tidwell. On Sept 26, 1772 he received 650 acres on Island Creek of Pacolet River where it empties into the Broad River. This 2150 acres could not have been a head right and no note as to his being a surveyor. This may have been grants for military service to the Crown. These lands were in what is now Spartanburg and York Counties.

Jan 10, 1775 an indenture between Robert Shirley of Craven Co., planter, and his wife Jane, and Mary Shirley his mother of the one part to Andrew Cunningham, planter, of the other part for the sum of four hundred and fifty pounds, hath granted 350 acres of land, it being the plantation on which said Robert Shirley and Mary now live, it being a part of 500 acres which was originally granted unto Richard Shirley, dec'd, which was the said Robert Shirley's father and the said Mary Shirley's husband, situate in Craven or Berkley County on Raburn Creek waters of Reedy and Saluda Rivers. This land was granted unto the said Richard Shirley by Honorable Lord Charles Granville Montague, Commander in Chief of the Province of South Carolina, Feb 15, 1769, signed Robert Shirley, Jane Shirley and Mary Shirley, wit. David Cunningham, Godfrey Isbell and Joseph Pinson.
MEMORANDUM: Abbeville Co. South Carolina Sept 5, 1788, David Cunningham made oath to their signatures.
Note: Some thirteen years had passed before he made oath as a witness to their signatures. This was not unusual in those days and may have been about the time the place was sold again.

Those listed as purchasers at the sale were: David Anderson, Jacob Niswanger, Birey Shirley, James McPherson, Samuel Freeman, John Shirley, Robert Shirley, Thomas Adkins, Wm. McPherson, Jonathon Forgey, James Watson, George Elmore, George Shirley, Aaron Shirley, Elizabeth Shirley, Ebenezer Starnes. Martin Shaw, Ransom Fuller, John Harvey, Wm. West, Wm. Redden. Appraisal of the estate was by: Jacob Niswanger, James McFerson and William Moore.
Who is this George Shirley?
(There is an unidentified George Shirley who in 1771 is recorded on Savannah
River nr. 96th Dist).
The heirs and representatives of Rebecca Shirley who died intestate, owning
land, being part of the 400 acres granted to one Richard Shirley. May 2, 1825

Will book E page 170. Moses Shirley, conveyed his interest to his nephew Bearley (Beverly?) Shirley,Aaron, John, Barnby (?), Lydia, Jane, Elizabeth, Easter Shirley, Polly married to Graham Elmore, Sarah married to Wm. McPherson, Rebecca married to Eijah Elmore, Edy Wright widow of George Wright & Huldy married to George Elmore.

I do not see
Robert Shirley who is a son of John and Rebecca, & the adm. of
his fathers will. In a book written by Ethel Updike several years ago, she did
not list his children. Robert is in the 1790 & 1800 census of Fairfield Co.
SC.
In the 1790 Census of Laurens Co. SC. John [& Rebecca] are listed with 4
males over 16 & one under 16 and 12 females.
The children would appear to be those mentioned in Rebecca's will. However, some of the females appear to be daughter in laws as is the case with Easter Shirley. It is not known with certainty who her husband was. It could have been a William or a Joel Shirley. The name Joel IS used in her descendants.
Many of these Shirleys went to Habersham Co. GA and to Tuscaloosa Co. AL

Greetings: You are hereby required to appear at the Court of Ordinary to be holden at Laurens Court House for the said District on the 6th day of June 1825 to show cause, if any of you can, why the real estate of Rebecca Shirley deceased containing ninety-six acres more or less, situate in the District and State aforesaid, being part of four hundred granted to Richard Shirley bounded by land of Jacob Newanger, Beverly Shirley and Shubel Starnes, should not be divided or sold attaining the same in equal porportion to the said John Shirley, Aaron Shirley, Beverly Shirley, Lydia Shirley, Jane Shirley, Elizabeth Shirley, Easter Shirley, Polly married to Graham Elmore, Sarah married to William McPerson, Rebecca married to Elijah Elmore, Hulda married to George Elmore and Edy Wright, widow.

Military service: July 01, 1862, Enlisted in the Confederate Army at Laurens, SC. He was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA, December 13, 1862, and was later killed in action at Gettysburg, PA, on July 3, 1863. He was a private in Co. F, 3rd SC Infantry.
Occupation: Before enlisting, John was a farmer. He left with a crop in the field, a pregnant wife, and a baby (William Fletcher) who was 8 months old.
