Hi, Betty.  Yes, Riley and Rutha are my line. 

A lot of my information on Riley and Rutha came from Alan L Lamb, of St. Louis.  The rest has been gathered from family members, various censuses, WFT Family #2199, and the LDS family site.  My late aunt was working on the Shirley line in the late 80's-early 90's, and somehow she learned of Alan and his relationship to the Shirleys.  Someone (perhaps Alan himself) sent her a copy of a letter he had written to a Mr. Brock, and this letter provided a lot of information for Lemuel Riley, Abner's son by his first wife, including a copy of Lem's obituary along with his picture.  Abner's first wife died rather young, and Abner married a widow from NC.  I have not been able to find out her married name, but she was Martha Ann Watson.  I have a picture of her mother and 9 of the grown children, and we were always told they were Cherokee.  So far I can't prove nor disprove that claim.

One of the stories that Mr. Lamb told Mr. Brock was of how upset Lemuel was with Abner for marrying this widow.  Lemuel left home after that, he didn't get along with the step-brothers and sisters, and he cut all ties with his family.  Lem's daughter Lillian was still alive at the time the letter was written, and she told a young Alan that she remembered watching her father shred and burn all the letters that he received from the family without ever opening them.  How very sad.

I have a picture of the headstone for Abner and Ann Shirley, and his date of birth is listed as 1826.  I wonder which date is correct.....1826 or 1835?  Abner's son Henry was my dad's grandfather.

I am hoping that someone somewhere will know the married name of Abner's second wife.  I did find an interesting bit of info on him earlier today.  I found an item that said he deserted in 1864 and was never found.  That may be why he ended up in Watauga Co., NC.  The area where he went to is still quite rural, and it would have been even more so back then.  I think about things like who was taking care of the children while he was in the service after his first wife died.  She died in 1860, and he was injured sometime in 1864, then it was only a couple of weeks after his return that he deserted.  It would appear that he was serving with his brother and brother-in-law in the same unit.
