"Shirley-Thaddeus Shirley lived in Newberry district, on Enoree
River, about 1790. He assigned all his interest in one hundred acres land which
he inherited from John Roberts and wife, Sarah, in 1791."
Note: Newberry District was not formed until 1795. Before that it was 96
District.
The
best description of Thaddeus and Elizabeth Shirley’s family comes from
Elizabeth’s will written and signed 20 October 1841; probated 03 Nov 1846 in
York Co., SC. This was found in Case 7, File #314, Will Book 3, p. 151.
This
will lists Elizabeth’s children in what appears to be their birth order:
Meredith,
oldest son
Philemon,
second son
Ruth
Wright, oldest daughter
Elisabeth
Wherry, second daughter
Nancy
Quick, third daughter
Frances
Perry, fourth daughter
James,
third son
Eli
C(lawson), youngest son
Thaddeus
Shirley died 20 Nov 1840 at the age of 83 years, 3 months & 4 days old. I
have calculated his birthdate at 16 Aug 1757. Thaddeus was living in York County
at the time of his death. He died intestate but his estate papers show the same
list of heirs as Elizabeth’s.
Nancy
Quick, wife of Martin Quick, M. Shurley, Frances Perry, wife of Jeremiah Perry,
Philemon Shurley, Eli C. Shurley, James
Shurley, Elizabeth Wherrie (living in Hickman Co., TN in 1842), Ruth Wright,
wife of Reuben Wright, Martin Quick, Jeremiah Perry, and Reuben Wright each
signed for their wives’ share of Thaddeus Shirley’s estate. Elizabeth
Wherrie/Wherry signed for her own portion which leads me to believe that she was
a widow by the time her father died.

Marriage
and Death Notices--A Miscellany
The
Quarterly, September 1991
Mr.
John R. Shurley, -Married on Wednesday, 8th December, by Professor James C.
Furman, to Miss Martha Ann, daughter of Col. George Leitner, all of Fairfield
District. (Southern Baptist, December 22, 1847.)
Mr.
John R. Shurley of Fairfield, -Married on Thursday the 5th inst., by the Rev. W.
W. Rollings, to Miss Mary Ann, third daughter of Alexr. Fewell, Esq., of
Ebenezerville, York District, So. Ca. (Southern Baptist, August 25, 1852.)
John
R. Shurley, -Died at his residence in Ebenezer, York District, S. C. on the 15th
of March, 1863, in the 47th year of his age. . .left wife and five children, an
aged mother and brothers and sisters. . . Confederate Baptist, May 6, 1863.)
He was doubtless named for the Rev. John Rooker, founding pastor of the Flint Hill Baptist Church, located north of what is now Fort Mill and very near the North Carolina State line. if the name "John Rooker" came from the Baptist pastor, then the likelihood is that some of the early Shurleys in York County were of the Baptist faith. John Rooker Shurley ... was a renowned teacher and school principal in both Fairfield and York districts. He founded the Shurley Institute at Winnsboro and then moved it to Ebenezer, where he was the principal of the Ebenezer Academy until his death. The latter school was often referred to as "the Athens of York."
Child

Abt. 1841; d. Bef. October 28, 1907.
Notes
for LEITNER SHIRLEY:
As
a young man he went to live in Brazil with his Leitner cousins who had fled the
South following the Civil War. He did not remain there for any length of time
and returned to the United States with Cephas J. and Matilda (Rives) Kee,
natives of Chester District, S.C.
He
followed in his father's footsteps and conducted several well-inown schools in
South Carolina. He was at one time pricnipal of the Ebenezer Academy. Later he
removed to Lancaster County, S.C. where he operated an excellent school for many
years. He called the school Carolina Academy for it was close to the North
Carolina line and many of his pupils lived in Mecklenburg's Providence
community.
Lancaster
Ledger, 1 Aug 1903.
The
handsome monument erected at Pleasant Valley church to the memory of Prof.
Leitner Shurley, by his former pupils, will be unveiled with impressive
ceremonies next Thursday. Capt. W. E. Ardrey of Fort Mill, will act as master of
ceremonies, and will make the introductory speech. Mr. Thomas F. McDow of
Yorkville; Mr. Victor S. Bryant of Durham, N.C. and Mr. James a Bell of Charlott,
all former pupils of Mr. Shurley, will make addresses appropriate to the
occasion. Mr. Shurley, who spent several years of his life in South America, was
one of the most successful teachers this country has ever known. He was
remarkable for the thoroughness with which he prepared boys for college. He
taughter a private school at Pleasant Valley for a number of years, which drew a
large patronage from North Carolina, as well as from different parts of this
state. He was idolized by his pupils.

GILLILLAND,
E.
A
prominent and substantial farmer of Mills county, Iowa, now living a comfortable
retired life is E. Gillilland, the subject of this sketch. He was born in Barren
county, Kentucky, May 6, 1814, and was a son of John and Sarah (McCurry)
Gillilland, both of whom were natives of Davidson county, North Carolina. John
Gillilland removed to Indiana at an early age and is still remembered in his
part of the state as an athlete and brave and successful hunter. At the time of
his settlement in Indiana the country was yet a wilderness, peopled with Indians
and filled with wild beasts, and his life was one of adventure, it often being
imperiled. Our subject can relate many thrilling incidents in his father's
career, upon several occasions the killing of Indians being necessary for self
protection. His physical strength and stature were beyond what was possessed by
the majority of men and our subject has inherited a great many of his father's
characteristics.
One
of the most important events in the life of our subject and one that deserves
prominence in a sketch of his life, was his marriage to Miss Fanny Wright,
February 15, 1835. These worthy people were reared in the same neighborhood, and
have passed more than sixty-six years together as man and wife. In 1857 Mr.
Gillilland built the present comfortable residence and here the most of their
lives have been passed. Of a family of nine children born to them, five survive,
these being: Reuben, a resident of Idaho; Amanda, a resident of Iowa; Anna, a
resident of Gray's Harbor, Washington; Shirley, an attorney, a resident of
Glenwood, Iowa; and Emma, a resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sarah Ann, Lemuel,
Cyrena and John W., are deceased. Our subject owns a fine farm of one hundred
and twenty acres of land, which is exceedingly productive, having been brought
to an excellent state of cultivation. He has been an industrious man all his
life, beginning his agricultural labors hoeing corn in Indiana, when but eight
years of age. He has served his fellow citizens upon the county board for
several years, but has never aspired to office. He has been a consistent member
of the Methodist church for many years, where he is beloved and valued.
Eighty-seven years have passed over the honored head of our subject, leaving him
a fine example of temperate, upright living, he never having been addicted to
either drink or tobacco in any form. He retains his eyesight and is able to
thread a needle and sight a gun as well as he did in youth. His sweet-faced
companion has also borne her years well, being active and healthy, although also
advanced along the path of life. If the friends and well-wishers of this
admirable couple could be gathered together, it would be one of the largest
congregations ever assembled in Mills county, so universal is the feeling of
esteem.

TWENTY-NINTH
IOWA INFANTRY
There
were Mills county men in company B and K, of this regiment. Company B was almost
entirely composed of men volunteering from Mills county. The company was ordered
into quarters by the Governor of the State on September 1, 1862 and mustered
into the United States service by Lieutenant Horace Brown, U.S.A., at Council
Bluffs, December 1, 1863, under a proclamation of the President of the United
States, bearing the date of July 2, 1862.
Company
K was composed of men from a number of counties, Mills being more often
represented than any other of the ten counties which contributed to its
enrollment. The company was ordered into quarters November 13, 1862 and mustered
into the service by Lieutenant Brown, December 1, 1863.*
[*In
the report of the Adjutant General this date is incorrectly printed for both
Company B and K, as December 1, 1862. The call to which they responded was not
issued by the President until July 3, 1862; hence the above date of 1863 is
manifestly a typographical error for 1863, to which it has herein been changed.
REC]
The
regiment went to the front early in 1863, being a part of the army of the
Southwest. It received its "baptism of blood" so far as any general
battle was concerned, in the engagement at Helena, Arkansas, July 4, 1863. It
had, previous to this time seen an occasional skirmish, but now came the
opportunity to test its courage and its faith in its officers and cause. On
Independence Day, 1863, began the struggle, an account of which may be most
faithfully given, as follows, in the report of the commanding officer:
Headquarters
Twenty-Ninth Iowa Infantry, Helena, Arkansas, July 6, 1864* (*this is evidently
another misprint) Colonel: I have the honor to make the following report of the
part taken in the engagement of the 4th instant by my regiment. My men were
drawn up in line of battle at daylight, and at half past four o'clock AM., in
pursuance of orders from Colonel Samuel A. Rice, commanding second brigade, we
marched across the bottom at double-quick, to a position on the Sterling road.
Upon reaching the point designated, I found that the enemy occupied the crest of
the hills with their skirmishers, north of battery A, commanding my position. I
immediately sent forward two companies of skirmishers to dislodge and drive them
back, but finding them too strongly posted, I continued to reinforce the line
until eight companies were deployed.
In
the meantime the enemy had placed a battery of two guns in position, with which
they opened a brisk fire, and moved rapidly upon us, cheering and exulting as
they advanced, being partially shielded from view by a fog which covered the
hills at that moment. Our skirmishers met them with a galling and incessant
fire, under which they gradually fell back, resolutely contesting every inch of
ground as they retired. Our skirmishers advanced steadily and cautiously, and
having gained the crest of the hill previously occupied by the enemy, compelled
him to abandon his guns which, after several ineffectual attempts he
subsequently recovered, and withdrew, leaving one caisson on the field. My men
were under a severe fire for more than five hours, and it affords me the
greatest pleasure to speak of both officers and men in terms of the highest
commendation for their coolness and bravery during the entire action. I saw no
flinching or wavering during the day. It is proper to add that several of my
officers and quite a number of my men, who were excused from duty in consequence
of disability, left their quarters and joined their respective companies when
the signal gun was fired.
Any
invidious distinctions among the members of my command would not be admissible
in this report, but I would not do justice to an accomplished officer should I
fail to acknowledge the efficient services of Lieutenant Colonel R. F. Patterson
during the action, and the special obligations I am under for the thorough
instruction previously given by him, to both officers and men in the responsible
duties and obligations of the soldier, the importance of which instruction was
so forcibly illustrated on the 5th instant.
I
regret I have to report that during the engagement the loss in my regiment was
seven killed and twenty-four wounded, some of them mortally - two of whom have

Wright,
Hon. A. R., P.O., Glenwood. Prominent among the many men of enterprise in this
county, none are more worthy of remembrance than Mr. Wright. He was born in
Putnam county, Indiana, January 20, 1829. His early youth was passed at home in
the pursuits usual to farm life. In 1848 he began the mercantile business,
following this for some six years. He then came to Mills county and located a
farm in Lyons township, continuing there until 1874. He then moved to Glenwood
and engaged in the trust, loan and brokerage business, which he still follows.
In November, 1880, he moved to his farm in Center township, containing 420 acres
of land, and ornamented with a beautiful residence of brick. Mr. Wright was
married December 24, 1849, to Miss Sarah H. Webster, of Manhattan, Indiana, born
April 17, 1831. They have by this union six children, four of whom are now
living: Frank, Charles, Caroline and Fannie. Mr. Wright has held many township
and county offices, serving his constituency with faithfulness and great
acceptability. In 1861 he was elected to the general assembly, and subsequently
to the fourteenth general assembly, acquitting himself as a statesman and
faithful legislator. He commands the respect and confidence of the entire
county, and is esteemed for his great generosity and the integrity of his
character.

I
regret I have to report that during the engagement the loss in my regiment was
seven killed and twenty-four wounded, some of them mortally - two of whom have
since died - and many of them severely. Among the number are some of my best and
bravest men. The enemy's loss it is not possible to state definitely, as he
succeeded in removing many of them from the field. We buried fourteen of his
dead, found the graves of seventeen more buried by himself, and brought one of
his wounded from the field.
I

Among
the practioneers at the bar of Glenwood is Shirley Gillilland who, having been
well qualified by a thorough preparation for the practice of the law, is now in
command of a large and distinctively representative clientage. He was born near
Glenwood and is the son of Edward and Frances (Wright) Gillilland, under whose
roof he remained until seventeen years of age acquiring his education in the
district schools and in the schools of Glenwood. He then left home and became a
student in the Iowa University, where he was graduated in 1879. Subsequently he
took a course in the law school there, being graduated in 1884. After being
licensed to practice he was for five years associated with General John Y.
Stone, but since that time has been alone. Professional advancement is
proverbially slow, yet for some years Mr. Gillilland has occupied an enviable
position among the practioners having in charge the most important litigated
interests of the district.
In
the year of his admission to the bar Mr. Gillilland was united in marriage to
Miss Florence Clark, who died five months later, at the age of twenty-eight
years. In 1889 he was again married, his second union being with Miss Elsie
Moulton, who was born near Waverly, Illinois, and is the mother of four
children, of whom three are yet living, as follows: Paul, Grace and Nathan F.
The family are members of the Congregational church in which Mr. Gilliland
served as trustee for several years, and in Sunday school work he is also
active. In politics he is a recognized leader of his party. He cast his first
vote for James A. Garfield. For nine years he served on the state board of
regents, has been county attorney of Mills county for six years and has filled
many of the local offices. He was president of the Old Settlers Association,
composed of the three counties of the southwest portion of the state,
Pottawattamie, Mills and Fremont. He takes an active interest in the various
affairs which contribute to the welfare and progress of the state and withholds
his support from no movement which he believes will operate for the general
good.

His youth was passed on his father's farm and in attending the district schools

was married September 14, 1862, to Miss Elizabeth E., daughter of William and

every move that had for its object the advancement of his township and county.
He has frequently been elected to the office of township trustee, and is at

giving satisfaction to his constituency. He owns a fine farm, well improved,
