He was a resident of Redbourn Hertfordshire at the time of his marriage in 1821; A Thomas Briant and Mary Shirley were witnesses to the marriage; John was missing from his family's 1851 census household. He returned by the 1861 census enumeration; He died in Q1 1870 (civil registration)

married Elizabeth Banfield on 19 Feb 1821 at Redbourn Hertfordshire. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Banfield (b c1777, Redbourne) and Mary Axtell (1776-1850). Elizabeth died in Q1 1875 (civil registration); She was widowed living at Redbourn Hertfordshire in 1851 census, age 49

She was unmarried and enumerated in mother's 1851 census household, and as unmarried living with both parents in 1861 census, age 34; She was enumerated as "mother" in son Edwin Francis Shirley's household in 1891 census (age 62) and in 1911 census (age is wrong)

married Louisa Hoar on 1 Aug 1853 at Islington. Louisa was the daughter of Richard Hoar and Ann Freeman, born at Brighton Surrey according to 1881 census. She was widowed and living with her aunt Ann Freeman in Harpenden Hertfordshire in 1861, age 25 and in 1871 census, also widowed living at Islington London Middlesex in 1881 census, age 46

DEATH OF FORMER OAKHAM MINISTER.- The death took place at Droylsden, Manchester, on Monday, of Rev Francis William Shirley, who began his career as a Weslyan minister at Oakham in 1878. Mr Shirley was 78 years of age. He was at Oakham two years, but was not again stationed in this neighborhood during his active ministry. Since 1916 he had been a supernumerary. From 1902 until his retirement he served in various Manchester circuits [Grantham Journal, Sat 16 Dec 1933].
