1892 March 12 - Carlow Sentinel pg 2 - Shocking Death of
a Farmer - We regret to record the particulars of a very sad
fatal accident which occurred on Thursday last, resulting in
the almost instantaneous death of Mr John Shirley, a respectable
farmer, who resided at Slyguff, near Bagnalstown. It appears
he was engaged loading some straw near his residence and was
on the cart tying down the load when the rope suddenly broke
and he was thrown with great violence against the gable end of
a house. His neck was broken by the force of the collision and
he only survived a few minutes. The regret at the sad occurrence
in the district is deep and universal, and much sympathy is felt
for his bereaved widow.
