3(vi). Paul Shirley
of Clogrennan, Cloydagh Parish, Carlow
born say 1790. He was a farmer of Knockabranna Co Carlow
at the time of his marriage in 1815; occupation Farmer Copanare
Cloydagh. In his marriage agreement dated 1815, Paul was granted
by his father John Shirley 23 acres of land at Belmount then
held by Edward Butler and land known as the Brow field and Big
Meadow then held by John Bradley. In the 1836 will of his father,
Paul was granted the tenancy of Kilfoyles farm in Coon (to be
held by his brother Abraham Shirley). In the 1852 Griffith's
Valuation, Paul leased 2 parcels from Horace Rochfort in Clogrenan,
Cloydagh parish, 82 acres and 44 acres. Paul also held as primary
lessor lands in Clowater, county Carlow, those lands leased to
Francis Shirley at the time. Paul Shirley died 21 Jul 1863, Clogrennan,
Cloydagh Parish, Carlow, Co. Carlow.
1836 LW&T of John Shirley. "...I further will
and bequeath to my son Abraham Shirley the profit rent now arising
from Kilfoyle's farm in Coon, being eight pounds ten shillings
annually to be possessed by same Abraham Shirley during the continuance
of same forever. I further will that Paul Shirley my son the
present occupier of same farm in Coon is not to be disturbed
from its possession by my son Abraham Shirley or any person representing
him provided the annual interest of eight pounds ten shillings
be paid regularly to same Abraham Shirley or his representation..."

A memorial of an indented deed of marriage settlement bearing
date the third day of October in the year one thousand eight
hundred and fifteen made between Paul Shirley of Knochabrannah
in the County of Carlow farmer of the one part John Shirley
Francis Edwards and Jane Edwards daughter of the said Francis
Edwards of the other part. Reciting that a marriage was then
shortly to be had and solemnized between the said Paul Shirley
and Jane Edwards and that the said Paul Shirley and Francis
Edwards for and in consideration of the said intended marriage
portion and provision the same did hereinafter ________ had __________
mutually covenanted and agreed in manner and form following that
was to say that the said Paul Shirley did thereby agree with
the said Jane Edwards that he the said Paul Shirley should and
would by the first day of November the next ensuing the date
thereof marry wed and take to wife the said Jane Edwards should
she thereunto consent and the said Jane Edwards did thereby agree
with the said Paul Shirley that she should and would before
the said first day of November the next ensuing wed and take
to husband the said Paul Shirley should he thereunto covenant
and reciting that the said Paul Shirley did for himself his heirs
and executors and administrators covenant promise and agree to
with the said Francis Edwards his heirs executors and administrators
to well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Jane
Edwards her executors administrators or assigns the just and
full sum of one hundred pounds sterling provided always upon
conditions that the said Jane Edwards should happen to survive
him the said Paul Shirley and not otherwise, which said sum
of one hundred pounds sterling was thereby agreed by the said
parties to be jointure or provision out of the said Paul Shirley's
estate as also of all other provision claim or demand of the
said Paul Shirley's personal estate it being the meaning of the
parties to said settlement that the said Jane Edwards should
happen to survive the said Paul Shirley and upon that contingency
only and not otherwise should have receive and be paid immediately
after the death of the said Paul Shirley out of the said Paul
Shirley's real or personal estate provided that nothing therein
shall hinder or disable or be construed to hinder or disable
the said Paul Shirley from leaving any additional portion to
the said Jan Edwards at the time of his death by will or otherwise
that he the said Paul Shirley should or might think proper. And
further reciting that in condition of the said intended marriage
portion and provision he the said John Shirley did grant convey
settle and secure unto the said Paul Shirley all that and those
rents issues and profits of the lands of Caon or Bellmount in
the County of Kilkenny then demised to Edward Butler and John
Bradley and from and after expiration of their several leases
thereof that then and in such case he the said Paul Shirley was
to have and receive twenty three acres of said lands Butlers
holding and the Brow field and big meadow then demised to said
John Bradley. To hold to the said Paul Shirley his heirs
executors administrators and assigns forever he paying the head
rent thereof and five pounds on the fall of each life and which
said deed contained all other clauses and consensuals as in such
cases are usual and which deed as to the due execution thereof
is witnessed by John Watters and Richard Watters both of Clogrennan
in the County of Carlow farmers and this memorial is to the execution
thereof by the said Paul Shirley is witnessed by the said John
Watters snd Thomas Richardson of the town and County of Carlow
writing clerk. Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of
John Watters Thomas Richardson Paul Shirley. The above named
John Watters maketh oath and sayeth he is subscribing witness
to the deed of which the above writing is a memorial and also
to said memorial and sayeth that he saw said deed duly executed
by all the parties thereto and saw this memorial duly executed
by the above named Paul Shirley and sayeth the name John Watters
subscribed as a witness to the said deedin this memorial ______

Killkenny in 1887 at the time of her death. She was buried at

have Dutch parents, Jane is buried in the same grave as her husband
inside the ruined walls of Clody church; In the 1901 Census of
Ireland, Jane lived in the Clogrenane Townland in the parish
of Cloydah with Fred, Lizzie, Carrie, Lavinia and Augusta. The
6 roomed house is described as 2nd class, the farm had 12 outbuildings.

He became Archdeacon of Connor, Belfast. Paul was at Barnes Green,
near Horsham Surrey and transferred to Antrim Rd. Belfast. Buried

immigration in Canada in November 1919. Emigrated
to Ontario Canada

dairy and a store. George spoke Irish and English. John: Known
to be fond of the drink, was thrown out by Sarah. Then lived
in Kiltown with Philip and Helen Stone. Became senile and blind
and entered a home in Dundrum.
